The perfect holiday for busy parents!  You choose the menu and the cook will shop for it and cook it and the maids will do all the cleaning, allowing you and your family to relax on your well deserved, family holiday.

A traditional French manor house, situated in extensive private grounds, with sheep in the orchard and direct access to a small river and rowing boat - luxurious simplicity its best.

The Owners of this property like to undertake all of their own customer service owing to the fantastic services and facilities on offer here. For this reason, the booking process is handled by them - please let us know if you would like additional information or to book your holiday here and we will put you in direct contact with them.

The main house

You are on holiday from the moment you step through the door of La Maison du Chateau.  Tea and a freshly baked cake will welcome you, there will be fresh flowers in abundance, the beds made up to your request and if appropriate, a fire lit in the Grand Salon, which overlooks the Great Park.

This formal but charming room is the main reception room on the ground floor of this 18th century manor house; cocktails can be taken here while you are waiting for dinner to be served by Delphine, the cook.  Or, perhaps one of your party is musically inclined and can tinkle the ivories of the piano on the back wall, whilst you enjoy the relaxing views from the many windows in this room.

Adjacent to this is the Petit Salon, which is furnished more simply, providing an open space for the younger members of the party to congregate and play with their toys or watch DVDs.  The third room on the ground floor is the traditional dining room, where Delphine, assisted by the maids, serves the freshly prepared meals of your choice.

There is a large kitchen and scullery but apart from warming baby bottles or making cups of tea, it will remain largely unused by yourselves as Delphine and the maids take care of all the cooking and washing up.  Delphine has worked for the family for many years and is completely at ease serving children's tea at 5.30pm while preparing for an adult dinner at 8pm, allowing you to enjoy dinner once the children have been bathed and popped into bed.  If you prefer to dine ‘en famille' on holiday, then, in consultation with Delphine choose a time to eat to suit you - it's your holiday!  Lunch is generally buffet style and can be taken inside in the formal dining room or outside on the lawn.

At the other side of the kitchen is a small double bedroom, with a private entrance and an en suite shower room.  This room is suitable for an accompanying nanny or guests who have difficulty with stairs (although adequate for a double, it is perhaps a little too small to be classed as wheelchair friendly).

Returning to the main part of the house, a sweeping staircase takes you up to an L shaped corridor to find the bedrooms.  Along the west side the 3 principal bedrooms face west over the park, the classically styled bedroom 1 has a 6ft double bed and an integral bathroom with bath, over bath shower and loo.  Bedroom 2 is next door with a double/twin bed and a spacious en suite bathroom with large bath, separate shower and loo.  This bathroom is also accessible from the corridor.  The third double/twin bed is in the corner of the L, with an adjacent bathroom with small bath, over bath shower and loo.

In the east wing, the first room is a spacious family bathroom with a large bath and loo.  The single bedroom is next to this, with space for another child's bed or a cot.  Further along the corridor is a fourth double/twin bedroom and at the end of the corridor a further double room.  All the bedrooms have wonderful period furniture in them and have space for additional beds or cots.

Parent Point:
The stairs are in keeping with the period of the house therefore parents should note that on the handrails bordering the stairs, the gaps are wider than recommended and care should be taken to ensure that children do not get their heads stuck between them.  However, there are custom made stairgates at the top and bottom of the stairs.

The barn rooms

Attached to the main house but with an independent entrance, a most amazing studio/music room has been created over the old stables.  Used by the proprietor to host her painting holidays, this large airy studio has magnificent natural light and a grand piano.  It has two further double/twin bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, both with baths, over bath showers and loos.

The bedrooms are situated at opposite ends of the barn, so offer plenty of privacy.  This large open indoor space doubles as a play barn on rainy days, allowing youngsters to work off their energy indoors as well.

Parent Point:
Children should only sleep in these rooms if accompanied by adults as the only entrance is via the pool area and up the exterior stairs - there is a stairgate at the top of the stairs.

It is perfectly possible to spend your whole holiday at the La Maison du Chateau without leaving the premises!

The heated outdoor pool with roman steps, in a marvellous sun trap, will probably be the focus for most people.  Expertly looked after by the owners local caretaker, the pool is alarmed and fenced allowing you to have all the benefits of a pool, without the worry.  An outdoor changing area with a heated shower for rinsing before and after your swim makes traipsing indoors, wet and dripping, a thing of the past.  Relax on the sun loungers and deck chairs, have a bbq lunch in the covered dining area and help yourselves to a drink from the outdoor fridge.

Or perhaps a game of tennis on the simple grass court? If that's too energetic, try croquet or petanque instead or a game of table tennis in the covered barn by the house.  If you are not too sporty, stroll around the 24 acres of park, see the old pigeonnier and the old wood house on your walk down to the river Armencon that borders the park on two sides.  When you reach it, do a spot of fishing (please bring your own gear and purchase a local licence), picnic on the private gravel beach or go for a row in the family rowing boat moored there.

For the children...
This is really a children's paradise, 24 enclosed acres of park with no traffic and endless space to roam for the older children.  Reminiscent of a bygone age, they can play ball games, build camps, play hide and seek or just run forever, building up an appetite for their next French feast.  Depending on their age they can trek to the river, picnic on the shore and paddle or use the boat.

For the smaller children, count the sheep in the orchards with your children and make sure none have escaped.  Or let them dig in the shaded sand pit or paddle in the small paddling pool, certain in the knowledge that the area around the house is totally enclosed.  This won't however keep out the local bird life which includes buzzards, different species of woodpeckers and kingfishers.

And Beyond

La Maison du Chateau is found in a tiny, traditional French village situated between Chablis and Beaune, so wine lovers are well catered for.  Private guided tours are available by a local (British) resident or he can come to La Maison du Chateau, bringing everything with him for a private wine tasting before dinner.

Lovers of history will not know which way to turn - Burgundy is renowned for its history and well preserved medieval villages; Noyers-sur-Serein has all its original ramparts nestling in the hollow of the hills.  Tonnere is a 16th century town with it's chateau, 2 churches and ‘hospice'.

Take the children to Alesia, the site of the decisive turning point in the history of France, where Vercingetorix, was defeated by Julius Caesar in 52BC.  Visit Flavigny sur Ouzerain where the film ‘Chocolat' was filmed - the medieval and renaissance buildings are so well preserved but unfortunately there's no sign of Johnny Depp!  Sigh!

Another film setting is the beautifully restored UNESCO site of Fontenay Abbey, now privately owned and used in the filming of ‘Cyrano de Bergerac'.  All these are practically on the doorstep and none more than an hour's drive away.

On the doorstep there are bustling markets to visit, restaurants to dine in en famille, hot air ballooning, kayaking and horse riding.  Cycle along the Burgundy canal and sample the local wines and the endless array of cheeses.

If you can bear to go a bit further, just an hour and 45 minutes drive away is the magnificent site of Guedalon.  Deep in the heart of the Burgundy forest, the locals are building a knight's castle - using only original materials, methods and traditional artisans, exactly as it would have been in the Middle Ages.  The project began in 1997 and is scheduled to take 25 years to complete, each year you visit, the castle has advanced and changed, each visit you learn something new, something to amaze every member of the family.

If you enjoy long days out exploring, take a day trip to Paris, Dijon and don't forget Disneyland Paris if you have children of the right age - what ever age that may be!

For rainy days, there is a bowling alley not far away and a fantastic pool complex with a collection of indoor pools with slides and water based activities.  Youmbao is an indoor and outdoor adventure playground just outside Auxerre - another of the local towns with unusually, a church, an abbey and a cathedral.

If you prefer something more cultural in the rain, the Grottes d'Arcy sur Cure are prehistoric caves with the most ancient cave paintings in the world.  A little bit further afield, Cardo Land near Chamoux is a wooded valley with full size dinosaurs, a prehistoric village, a museum and an adventure playground.
