Spotlight On…Berry Farm

The Steadings

When British husband and wife team Sandra and Tony and their two children first laid eyes on Berry Farm fifteen years ago, it was little more than ruins. However, they immediately fell in love and dedicated the next few years to restoring it, designing the property with little ones specifically in mind.

Berry Farm, once a working fruit farm, is now a charming cluster of six cottages that can be found nestled within 22 acres of beautiful Breton countryside, 5 minutes from the beautiful city of Camors in the North West of the country.

With a private secured swimming pool, playground, play-barn, interior-designed bedrooms and lots of special ‘Tots Love Fun’ extra touches, you may be tempted to spend your entire holiday cocooned at the property. However, there’s heaps of fun to be had if you do manage to venture out.

Here we quiz Sandra about the properties and surrounding area…

What do you love most about the property?

Home Farm

It’s an enchanting group of cottages, all with unique architecture and original features. Despite the fact it was a ruin when we moved in we instantly fell in love with it.  There was such a good feeling about the place we knew it was the best place to bring up our young family

And the location…?
At the end of a private tree lined driveway the property is a haven of tranquillity set amidst a 1372 hectare forest
We love the endless birdsong and star filled night skies. The historic picturesque towns of Auray and Vannes and beautiful beaches all within 30 minutes drive, plus supermarkets are just 3 kms away
I love being able to walk out of my front door and go running in the forest and also being able to watch the horses graze from my window.
You may want to google the benefits of ‘forest bathing’ (taking in the forest atmosphere) very popular with the Japanese! It lowers stress levels boosts the immune system and produces overall feelings of well-being Perfect for stressed parents of TOTS.

You have half an hour to spare before supper – what would you do with the kids?

The beauty of Berry Farm is that the children often entertain themselves with their new playmates in the courtyard garden which all the houses open on to.
Or they can go for a quick splash in the heated salt water pool (Interesting fact: The salt in salt-pools is very different to sea-water. The salt is converted into chlorine which means it’s must kinder to the skin and eyes than chemically chlorinated water. The water feels deliciously soft, it’s like swimming in rainwater)
Or have a go kart race in the playbarn followed by a jump on the trampoline…
Or walk in the woods to find the perfect twig to roast marshmallows on the BBQ…
Or come with me to feed the horses and greedy pony!

Best place to buy your fresh bread

There’s a wonderful bakery and grocery store 2.5km away in the village of Camors

Best place for a picnic

Naturally the best place for a picnic is in the forest. Either by the arboretum or by the ponds

My children also loved going for one at Chateau de Kergeuhennec which is a sculpture park set around a château, about 25 minutes drive away.
Best Ice Creams
Ice Cream
Igloo at Carnac. With around 177 different flavours of ice-cream you are certain to find something that even the fussiest members of the family will enjoy.
Best Restaurant
The best nearby restaurant is without a doubt La Crêperie du Chateau. It’s in a lovely garden setting, where the kids can play whilst you relax and enjoy your food.
However, if you didn’t want to venture out but wanted a break from cooking, we have Sally from Daisy Chain Catering who can provide yummy home-cooked meals right to your cottage.

Best Pushchair Stroll

Enjoy the beautiful Forest of Camors which can be found right on your doorstep! Fantastic for walking, cycling, picnicking, fishing in the ponds, or even Gruffalo hunting!

Best Beaches

Carnac beach is great for building sand castles. There’s a lovely sheltered bay ‘Le Men Du’ which is super for tiny tots and can be found between Carnac and trinité sur mer.
Or if you want sand castles and rock pools Erdeven is perfect
There are actually too many beaches to choose from!
Best Day Out

Pont Scorff Zoo is well worth driving the 21 miles to get to.  It’s a good sized zoo with a sea lion show and wild bird demonstration

Best Market

There are several markets close by that can be visited every day of the week. However, our favourite is the market at Auray – here you can buy delicious seasonal fresh produce and then take a scenic train ride around the town on the tourist train

Why come here?
We are completely spoilt for Choice
Maybe the tranquillity and beauty of the forest and beaches, the hustle and bustle of the markets or sight seeing in historic towns, We have it all.
There’s just so much to do and see, either on the doorstep or within 30 minutes drive
We have lived here for over 15 yrs and still haven’t done everything!
