Indoors & Outdoors

Indoors

This beautiful 18th century Italian farmhouse has been lovingly renovated to combine the best of modern and traditional rustic style, with high chestnut-beamed ceilings to keep the house cool.

Enter this three storey house on the ground floor and you’ll find yourself in the kitchen, which oozes country heritage style with oak doors.  It has a large range cooker with two ovens, a dishwasher and a breakfast table.

There are a couple of steps up to the utility room, which has a washing machine, dryer, microwave and iron.  It is also home to fun pool toys and extra lounge chairs.

The utility room has access to a downstairs loo, which you can also enter from the games room.

Back through the kitchen, there is a large dining room to the right, which has a big dining table and leather sofas, which are positioned to make the most of the fantastic views.

The dining room leads through to a fantastic games room, which kids of all ages (and even adults) will love.  It is kitted out with lots of toys and games and dress-up outfits as well as a full-size pool table.

It has a TV and DVD player with a selection of DVDs and CDs, as well as home cinema surround sound, so you can enjoy the full experience.

From the dining room, a little hallway leads off to two bedrooms, which can both be made up as twins or doubles.  These rooms share a bathroom with a separate shower.  The left-hand room has doors out to the garden.

From the dining room, stairs lead up to the first floor.  These stairs have removable gating to prevent unsupervised access.

At the top of the stairs, you’ll find yourself in a large tiled living area with comfy seating.

Three bedrooms lead off the living area, including the master bedroom, which has an en suite bathroom with a separate shower.  From the bedroom, a Juliet balcony overlooks the gardens.

The other two bedrooms can be made up as twins or super-king sized doubles and they each have an en suite shower room; there is an additional separate loo off the sitting room.

From the living area, a spiral staircase leads up to the final bedroom.  The staircase is gated top and bottom but the upstairs bedroom isn’t suitable for toddlers.

At the top of the staircase is a mezzanine area with seating and filled bookshelves.  To the left of this, there is a large double bedroom, which also has bunkbeds and a single bed, ideal for older kids.

Parent Point:

  • Due to the spiral staircase and mezzanine style, the top floor is unsuitable for toddlers

Outdoors

Nestled in the foothills of the Apennines and surrounded by five acres of woodland, it’s safe to say that the views from Casa Castagna are absolutely stunning.

Stepping out onto the terrace, you can see the lawns and the Italian oak, cypress trees and olive groves beyond, which gives a real sense of just how private this casa really is.

There are lots of seating areas throughout the grounds, from the dining table on the loggia to a large oak tree, where you can enjoy a spot of lunch.

The long driveway runs down one side of the building and is lined by beautiful cypress trees.

The large lawn is perfect for running around and playing games of football with the nets provided.  There’s also two swing sets including a baby swing so the whole family can play.

Beyond this lawn, the pool area is completely enclosed and is accessed through a lockable gate.

The large pool is heated so that you can enjoy it even if the weather is not warm, and there are plenty of sun loungers poolside.

Crescent-shaped roman steps lead into the pool where little ones can splash out, and the water on the top step is only 20cm deep, so even the tiniest of children can enjoy a little splash.

Beyond the pool area, you can see the wooded area and reservoir, which are completely enclosed.  If you fancy a countryside walk, there’s plenty to explore.

What's Around?

The Umbria region is renowned for its locally-produced wine, olives, truffles and wild mushrooms, making it the perfect area to dine out and enjoy the delicious delicacies.

Agriturismo Ristorante Calagrana

You won’t have to travel far to experience exquisite cuisine as Agriturismo Ristorante Calagrana is just a 10 minute drive away.

It is set in a restored farm building with two terraces that offer incredible views of the valley.

The menu consists of wonderfully-made local dishes, such as homemade pasta and freshly baked bread, as well as local wines.

There is no menu as the staff will offer what has been made fresh that day, and they will offer to make smaller and simpler dishes for little ones.

If you would like to take a part of the local cuisine home with you, Calagrana also run cookery classes where you can learn to make fresh pasta as well as learning recipes and new cooking techniques.

Local Activities

Umbria has plenty to keep the whole family entertained as it is a beautiful area of Italy with lots of fascinating history.

Perugia is the regions capital.  A lively university town, it is packed with artistic treasures and is home to Perugina chocolate too.  You can take a tour of the factory and see how the chocolates are made, which includes a taste of the chocolate.

Perugia has loads of shops including top brands, and there’s also trendy bars.  Just remember that the shops will be shut between 1pm and 3.30-4pm every day.

There’s plenty of choice for places to eat in Perugia, too.  La Botte is a great choice for authentic Italian dishes that the whole family will enjoy – they serve gnocchi, delicious pasta dishes, succulent meats and a range of salads.

They also have a delicious range of pizzas with 35-40 different varieties, where you can order one for the table and once you’ve finished that one, order another, and then another!  You can even order a Nutella pizza for dessert, too.

Lake Trasimeno

It is a 40 minute drive to Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in central Italy, where there is a lot of culture and plenty to do.

The ‘La Valle’ Oasis is a beautiful nature area, which has shallow waters that provide a stopover point and nesting place for thousands of migrating birds every year.  It is open to visitors all year with a guided tour and English audio guide available.

Aeroporto Eleutieri was a military airport until a few decades ago but now it has been turned into a green area with 100 hectares of grounds.

It is the meeting point for organised walking excursions, bike trips and horseback rides but there is also land and lake flora and fauna, making it the perfect venue for environmental events and open air activities.

The lake is also home to beautiful lake beaches, which are packed full of activities including canoe and pedalo rental, ping pong and volleyball facilities.

Little ones will love the children’s playground and there’s also a coffee bar and live bands on Fridays.
