    Indoors & Outdoors

    Indoors

This charming Catalan masia is a true home from home, with traditional character, modern comforts, and plenty of light and space.

The combination of stunning Catalan vaulted ceilings, tiled and wooden floors, shuttered windows and thick walls keep the house cool and comfortable during the summer months.

    • Large sitting room with doors to the dining terrace
    • Dining area with extendible table
    • Excellently equipped kitchen with large dining table
    • Downstairs loo
    • Fully stocked toy cupboard
    • Up the gated stairs are five large bedrooms:
    • Huge family suite with a double and single bed, as well as an adjoining dressing room with child’s bed.  Plenty of room for a cot.  It has a large en-suite with bath and walk-in shower
    • Bedroom two with a double bed and a child’s bed and en-suite bathroom
    • Bedroom three with double bed
    • Bedroom four with a bunk bed (double bottom bunk) and room for a cot.  Access to first floor terrace
    • Bedroom three and four share a ‘Jack and Jill’ shower room
    • The fifth bedroom is on the top floor (accessed via gated stairs) and has a double and a single bed as well as an en-suite shower room and room for a cot
    • All rooms have either or both ceiling and free standing fans
    • WiFi throughout

    Parent points:

    • There is a step up to the front door, the side door to the terrace and to most of the en suites
    • The first floor terrace is accessed through bedroom four.  The door to the terrace should be kept locked and children should only be allowed on the terrace under adult supervision
    • There is a fixed child's safety gate at the bottom of the second staircase to the attic bedroom.  There are three further removeable safety gates for the main stairs, and for the top of the stairs as you enter the attic bedroom
    • There is a fixed child's safety gate at the attic bedroom balcony

    Outdoors

The outside space at Casa Avellana is extensive and extremely well-designed with young families firmly in mind.

Set within 35 acres of grounds, immediately surrounding the masia is a beautiful lawned walled garden with fragrant mediterranean trees, shrubs and herbs.

The swimming pool is in the south facing front garden, a real sun trap, and sheltered by the garden wall.  The pool is enclosed by a fence with locking gate and there is a poolside shower, sun loungers and parasols.

The beautful covered terrace extends down one side of the house.  This wonderful space will be a magnet for the whole family and is perfect for al fresco breakfasts, lunch and dinner as well as simply relaxing with a cool drink while the children play.  It's also the ideal spot to set up the ping pong table!

Beyond the walled garden is another grassed area ideal for a game of football or playing boules.

There is also a well stocked vegetable garden from which guests can enjoy organically-grown produce, such as butternut squash, cucumbers and tomatoes, and little ones can pick strawberries.

Behind the house is an outbuilding that houses bicycles for guests to borrow.

    Parent points:

    • One short section of the wall surrounding the garden, close to the terrace, is low at 69cm and abuts the swimming pool pump cover.  There is a safety barrier but children should be supervised when playing in the garden

    What's Around?

There is so much to explore in this area of Catalonia that you'll be spoilt for choice.

The Girona Province, often referred to as 'the sunny side of the Pyrenees', has a climate which makes it ideal as an all year-round holiday destination and the Catalan people are very welcoming.

It's a region of varied landscape...the rugged Costa Brava coast with small coastal villages, sandy coves and hilltop towns, the undulating landscape of the Baix Emporda with medieval villages and sunflowers, the Roses plain dotted with villages and fruit orchards, the verdant La Selva basin and the magnificent volcanic landscape of the Garrotxa and lake at Banyoles.

Although Casa Avellana is in an idyllic countryside location, within just a 10 minute drive there are plenty of restaurants and bars, many with children's play areas.

The local village of Brunyola hosts a Hazelnut Festival on the first weekend in October and there is nothing more delightful than to sit on the church steps on a balmy evening listening to Havaneras, or traditional songs, while sipping cremat, the Catalan rum coffee.

    Beaches

Platja d'Aro, just a 25 minute drive away is a lively, cosmopolitan resort with beautiful sandy beaches, backed by a promenade lined with bars and restaurants and a wonderful marina at the south end.  It is known for being family friendly and for its shopping.  Aquadiver waterpark has excellent facilities for young children and perfect for cooling off during the summer months.

To the north of Platja d'Aro is one of the most beautiful stretches of the Costa Brava.  The coastal villages of Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc and Tamariu are utterly charming with smaller beaches, coves and inlets, clear water and fishing boats. Spend the day on the beach, eat in one of the many restaurants overlooking the sea, take a boat trip, or wander along the coastal route that links many of the villages.

    Girona

Girona is less than 15-minutes' drive from Casa Avellana.  This charming, small city boasts interesting shops, bars and restaurants, cultural activities, the little green tourist train, open air markets, fiestas and traditional events.  Wander through the old town or take the tourist train, time your visit to experience one of Girona’s many festivals, dine or nibble on tapas or enjoy a coffee in Plaça Independencia and people watch, treat everyone to a Catalan bakery or an ice cream … and remember to kiss the famous lioness' bottom.

    Barcelona

The cosmopolitan city of Barcelona is just an hour away by car or a short hop on the high speed rail link from Girona.  This bustling city offers both beach and city life. Stroll along Las Ramblas, experience La Boqueria market, hop on and off the open top tourist buses, visit Camp Nou, Gaudis' many houses, La Sagrada Familia, Picasso and Miro’s museums, the aquarium or wander quirky, charming streets and relax with a local vermut or beer.

    Day Trips

If you fancy venturing further afield, there are an endless number of places worth visiting in Girona Province including the Dali Museum in Figueres, the artist's house in Port Lligat, Roman and Greek ruins in Emporda by L’Escala, the medieval villages of Besalu and Peratallada and ceramic shopping in La Bisbal.

If you are a family of thrill-seekers then Port Aventura, one of Spain's most popular theme parks, is for you.  Located in Salou, about a two-hour drive away, there are lots of rides, a whole section for little ones and a huge water park.
