What's Around?

This villa is tucked away on the edge of town where you can enjoy the peace and quiet and beautiful views but be within a few minutes drive of the nearest amenities and beaches.

Luz's wide sandy beach is very popular all year round with families of all ages and there are plenty of other attractions in the town and nearby to keep everyone happy. There's a choice of supermarkets and plenty of shops as well as a wide variety of restaurants and cafes throughout the town to suit all tastes.

The sea is generally calm in Luz Bay and the beach is awarded the European Blue Flag so is therefore very popular with families. There are sunbeds and sun shades available for hire, various watersports on offer and a beach club in the summer months for children over the age of 5. There are rock pools at the far end of beach to explore at low tide too. There are a selection of bars and restaurants on the promenade facing the beach if you need to get out of the sun and they're a great place to end the day with a local sundowner.

If you fancy exploring the coastline there are lots of other beautiful sandy beaches all along the south coast, easily accessible, most with free car parking and some with sun bed/brolly hire and lifeguards. Some are secluded, golden sandy coves set against dramatic, rugged cliffs, some have rock pools and are ideal for paddling and all are a lovely spot for a family picnic.

The nearest large town is Lagos whose old town is bustling and popular with tourists exploring the cobbled streets and the huge range of restaurants and eateries, as well as nightlife. In the summer the square and cobbled streets throng at night with people watching the street entertainers. There's also a Saturday morning ‘farmer's market' (Portuguese style) where the locals bring their homegrown produce, and the fish market opens early every day.

It's a town with history too and the old town walls still stand guard in places and the fort defends the entrance to the harbour. There are museums, a cultural centre, churches and the historic slave market to visit too.

The local cuisine is one of Portugal's best kept secrets and you can sample a huge choice of style of restaurants and food with something for everyone. And the Portuguese are so family oriented that children are always welcome at the dinner table, whatever time of day or night!

As well as sampling the more sheltered sandy coves all along the south coast from Lagos to the most westerly point Sagres, explore further afield up the west coastline towards Aljezur where the beaches are more rugged and are home to many surfers and windsurfers who come here for the perfect conditions. From here you can explore the protected area of the Costa Vicentina national park which stretches further north up to Sines, with much more to discover.

If you tire of the beach then the area offers a myriad of other activities to try: various boat trips including a pirate ship (an old Portuguese Caravelle) moored in Lagos, or take a small boat to visit the famous grottoes in the cliffs. Sailing and scuba diving are very popular or there is go-karting at the nearby Autodromo or get a birds eye view of the coast in a hang glider from Lagos aerodrome. Pony trekking, kayaking, bowling, bird watching, lessons in painting and Portuguese cookery as well as guided walks and mountain biking are all available locally.

You have great family days out at the various water parks or theme parks such as Zoomarine, Slide & Splash, Krazyworld or Lagos Zoo, which is perfect for little ones. For Mum, Dad and Grandparents you could try one of the many vineyards and wine tours available for some more ‘grown up' time, or play a round of golf on one of the many golf courses in the area. Clubs are widely available for hire.

If you need to escape the heat try the Children's Science Centre in Lagos or head to the hills in Monchique where the air is cooler. Inland the rolling countryside is scattered with orange groves where you can explore more of the traditional Algarve, on mapped walks or bike routes, or visit the historical towns of Silves and Alte.
