An amazing holiday, the perfect venue for a family with young children and brilliant hosts - Henri offering us freshly picked figs while we were enjoying our evening meal was just lovely. Couldn't recommend more highly, we will go again.

We stayed at Maison des Vignes for a week over Easter and loved it. The house is a great size with good self catering facilities, the scenery and local area are beautiful and Henri and his wife couldn't have done more to look after us. We'll definitely be back again.

Maison des Vignes is a large, airy holiday property with luxurious touches like leather sofas, oak units, modern appliances and air-conditioning throughout.
Entering into the sitting room with double height ceilings, you can enjoy stunning views towards the mountains. Large doors open onto your private terrace and enclosed gravelled garden with BBQ, table and chairs. The sitting room also has a large screen TV, DVD and French satellite TV, for chilled out evenings.
The sitting room leads to an open-plan dining area and modern oak-fitted kitchen complete with oven, American fridge-freezer, washing machine and dishwasher.
Also downstairs is the large master bedroom with en suite shower room and WC. This room is well suited to anyone with walking difficulties as it has an extra-large doorframe, walk-in shower and no steps on the ground floor – a good choice perhaps for grandparents to stay in.
A gated staircase takes you to the galleried landing overlooking the sitting room, leading to two further en suite double bedrooms and a small twin bedroom suitable for children, all of which are tastefully furnished.
Le Mas is approached via a quiet country road, with only one or two properties further along it, making it very safe and quiet.
Maison des Vignes is set in a secluded spot away from the other holiday properties at Le Mas, which has an additional five properties on site. It has its own private garden with dining area, BBQ and sun sunloungers, plus a further gravelled area with palm trees, shade and lovely views towards the mountains. Guests can access the main garden, pool and games areas shared with the other properties via an internal gate.
There is a large communal terrace with two steps leading up to a grassy area and just beyond that is the heated, enclosed swimming pool. The pool is surrounded by a terrace with plenty of sun beds, while a pergola provides an attractive shady area to snooze in.
Kids can have a brilliant run around, a game of football or boules in the enormous, flat gardens that surround the enclosed pool. A little further on from the other Le Mas properties, a new barn conversion provides a fantastic toddler’s soft play area, plus tables and chairs for a board game or creative activity, while out front is a new adventure playground with a ping pong table.
A gate closes off the terrace from the parking area ensuring children stay away from any cars.
If you can bear to tear yourself away from lazing around the pool, you are spoilt for choice for things to do in the area, particularly as it is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year, making it perfect for late Autumn and early Spring holidays. We’d recommend getting a hire car to explore this diverse region.
Le Mas is surrounded by beautiful countryside with amazing views of the Pyrenees. On your doorstep, you can pop in at the local farmer for fresh produce or ask for newly laid eggs and delicious honey from the neighbouring property.
Just a short drive away is the town of Thuir, which will give you real flavour of rural French life without any tourist trappings. The town has a range of bakeries, delis, shops and cafes as well as family friendly and gourmet restaurants, and if you can fit in any more food, Saturday is market day giving you the chance to stock up on regional delicacies. Thuir is also home to the largest oak vat in the world which you can see at Les Caves Byrrh while sampling the local Pernod. Alternatively explore nearby Castelnou, a wonderful example of a fortified village dozing behind stone walls with a maze of cobbled streets and tiny restaurants serving delicious local produce.
This region of France was originally part of Spain, known as Catalan country. The influence of both cultures creates a fascinating mix, giving you a flavour of two countries in one. The region is rich in medieval history, particularly linked to the crusades and myths about the Holy Grail. If you like castle ruins, museums and archeological sites, head in the direction of Carcassonne for a history fix or try the ruins of the mountain top fortress of Peyrepertuse.
To compare life in France to that of its neighbour, drive south for twenty minutes from Thuir to reach the Spanish border and the Pyrenees, where you can discover numerous small villages built into the mountains with spectacular views of the area. Figueres, home of Salvador Dali is just fifty minutes drive from Thuir, while the white sandy beaches of Roses is just over an hour. The cosmopolitan delights of Barcelona can be reached in two hours.
Twenty minutes the other direction from Le Mas is the pretty town of Perpignan, good for a browse around or for the kids to enjoy bowling or the cinema on a rare rainy day. North of Perpignan in Rivesaltes you’ll find the biggest Go Karting track in Europe.
A trip out to the French beaches of Cote Vermeille will take about 40 minutes, passing through the beautiful old cathedral town of Elne. Wide sandy beaches stretch for miles, including Saint-Cyprien, home to Aqualand waterpark which the kids will love, or further up the coast to the beach resort of Canet Plage.
Head down the coast towards Spain if you prefer smaller coves and explore the beautiful fishing towns of Collioure, Port Vendres and Banyuls.
Already spoilt for choice, the Pyrenees mountains are also just a short drive away. For active families with older children and teens, you might want to try Font Romeu or Pyrenees 2000 ski resorts in winter, or seek out white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking and mountaineering adventures in warmer months. For a more gentle adventure, try catching the Yellow Train from the fortified town ofVillefranche-de-Conflent. The train weaves its way up through the mountains for spectacular views or visit Les Grandes Canalettes, the largest grotto in Europe with spectacular stalagmites, earning it the name of ‘the underground Versailles of the Pyrenees’.
Alternatively, head through the mountains towards Ceret, famous for its cherry orchards and eclectic Saturday morning market, or continue on to the beautiful spa town of Amelie Les Bains at an altitude of 230metres.
You really can do something different every single day and get to enjoy a family-friendly holiday in France and Spain.
