Indoors & Outdoors

Indoors

Maison Micheline is bright and airy throughout and the living, dining and kitchen areas are in family-friendly open plan design.
French doors open onto stone steps which lead down to the small private back garden.
A large table, with space for eight to eat in comfort, can be found in the dining area. Of course the fabulous French sunshine may tempt you outdoors to eat on the terrace in the pretty garden.
The modern fitted kitchen is equipped with everything needed for rustling up a quick snack or a substantial family meal and comes with an oven/hob, American-style fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave. The washing machine is stored in an adjoining cupboard.
Two of the gite's four bedrooms are on the ground floor. A small, but very lovely, double room benefits from a modern en suite shower room. The pretty twin room has a family-sized separate bathroom, with a bath and shower over, conveniently located next door.
The wooden staircase, with child gates at the top and bottom, leads to a large twin bedroom and the super master bedroom with a double bed, Juliette balcony overlooking the Longveau estate and en suite shower room with double-sized shower cubicle.

All four bedrooms have space for a cot.

Parent Points:

  • Ensure the safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs are used to prevent unsupervised access as there is a gap half way up between the stairs and window/wall that a small child could fall through
  • Some of the beautiful exposed beams upstairs are low so please take care not to bump your head
  • There is a small step down into the upstairs twin bedroom

Outdoors

Maison Micheline has a small, but pretty, private and fully-enclosed back garden, accessed by a small flight of stone steps

There's a terraced area, furnished with an outdoor dining table and chairs, and a barbecue for rustling up al fresco snacks and meals.

A section of lawn offers space to relax on the sun loungers and for little ones to play.

Longeveau's wide range of family-friendly facilities are all within a few minutes' walk of the gîte.

Parent Point:

• A considerable distance - on the other side of the golf course - from Maison Micheline are two open lakes which, because of their size, can not be fenced for safety

What's Around?

Longeveau is located on the Charente/Dordogne border with a wide choice of family-friendly attractions and picturesque villages and towns all within easy reach. The nearest sandy beaches are a two hour drive away.

Saint-Séverin
The nearest village to Longeveau is Saint-Séverin, just 5km away.
This pretty village is home to several small shops, including a bakery, butcher, chemist and supermarket, as well as local services.
There is also a popular small market every Thursday morning.

Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne
About the same distance in the opposite direction is Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne, officially one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Built on a hillside above the river Dronne, the village has narrow streets, shady squares to stop and watch the world go by and interesting architecture.
Children and grown-ups alike will enjoy the puppet theatre in the central square, showing classic tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Ali Baba. The shows are extremely popular and booking is essential.
The village is famous for its Underground Church of St Jean, or monolithic church, carved out of the rock. It's huge and, at 20m at its highest point, the tallest in the world. A stone staircase leads up to the first floor where there is a spectacular view of the interior.
Another church worth visiting is the Romanesque St Jacques, boasting a beautiful 12th century facade with finely carved arches.
The village's river beach is perfect for picnics and paddling and is sure to prove popular with the whole family. There's also a children's playground, canoeing, kayaking and fishing - plus a great cafe.

Bonnes
Bonnes is another pretty village in a lovely location on the Dronne river and less than half an hour's drive from Longeveau.
Here you'll find a pony club for children of all ages and abilities and a wonderful 11km countryside walk, Circuit de Bonnes.
A festival is held in August when the grand finale is a spectacular fireworks display.

Riberac
The attractive, but relatively quiet town, of Riberac is at its best on a Friday morning when it stages a market, reputedly one of the biggest and best in the Dordogne.
Just 16km from Longeveau, there are also lots of local shops, including wine caves, a couple of big supermarkets and plenty of child-friendly restaurants.
Free music evenings are held in the town square on Tuesday nights in July and August.

La Jemaye
This little hamlet is well-known for its large lake with beaches, a play area and family-friendly eateries and is an easy half-an-hour's drive from Maison Micheline.
There are also woodland walks and a hide to watch the birds on the lake.
During July and August there are sporting activities and events, including water skiing and cycling.

Angoulème
The ramparted city of Angoulème the capital of Charente and home to breathtaking architecture, traditional markets and beautiful gardens.
A 45-minute drive from Longeveau, take time out to visit one of the many pavement cafes or dine in a wide choice of family-friendly restaurants.
The city is the world capital for Bande Dessinée - comic strip - and many of the buildings are decorated in this style. There's also a fascinating museum dedicated to the art.
In Angoulème's mountain shopping zone you'll find more active fun for youngsters at Kizou Adventures - an indoor playground with ball pools, ropes and soft play, for little ones aged from six months to 10 years.
And just outside the city is the fabulous Plan d'Eau water lake with several beaches - perfect for a bit of bucket and spade fun - and the chance to try out a wide range of water sports.

Cognac
Cognac, about an hour from Longeveau, is famous for the grape-based spirit made in the town for more than 300 years.
Stroll through its narrow streets to discover a fascinating mix of fabulous medieval timber framed houses and grander mansions.
A cruise on a replica gabarre, the traditional flat-bottomed oak boat that once transported cognac, salt and other produce, is a great way to see the town from the river and takes about two hours.
Signposted walking routes lead visitors through different parts of the town - explore the era of the salt trade and brandy industry or the urban growth that took place in the 19th century.
One of the most popular tourist attractions is a tour of one - or more - of the many big name cognac producers recounting the drink's history, how it is made and offering tastings.
Close to Cognac is the fun-packed Les Antilles de Jonzac indoor water park,
one of the largest in Europe.
Perfect for children and adults, there's a main lagoon with beaches, palm trees, a tropical glasshouse, slides and water toboggan ride.
For more serious swimmers there's a 25m sports pool and games and events are organised for children and teenagers.
For the grown-ups the fitness and health centre includes Turkish and Roman baths, a sauna, jacuzzis and a solarium and, if you're feeling energetic, a fully-equipped fitness area.
If you get peckish this popular water park has a choice of eating options.

Saint-Emilion
A little further afield, Saint-Emilion is one of the four Bordeaux wine regions and produces some of the finest wine in the world.
The village, about an hour-and-a-quarter from Maison Micheline, is surrounded by vineyards and chateaux and there are lots of opportunities to sample and buy.
Wander the pretty winding streets, take time out at one of the pavement cafes or restaurants, discover historical buildings and monuments or indulge in some retail therapy.
The Romanesque church features a beautiful 14th century cloister and if you climb the bell tower you'll be rewarded with magnificent views over the town and surrounding vineyards.
There's also a great view from the top of the Chateau du Roy 13th century donjon in the centre of town - after you've negotiated the 118 steps.
A labyrinth of passages and rooms run deep under the village and there are guided tours taking in the catacombs and impressive buried monolithic church, the biggest in Europe.
There's also an underground pottery museum with exhibits from the Roman period to modern day.

Beaches
There are a number of lovely beaches about a two hours' drive from Longeveau - and two of the best are Arcachon and Royan.
Arcachon not only has superb sandy beaches, but also a picturesque sea-front promenade, plenty of shops, bars and eateries plus some beautiful architecture showcased in magnificent villas featuring stained glass, ornate balconies and intricate brickwork.
The resort is also home to the fun-packed Aqualand water park with rides and slides for all ages.
Royan's beaches are, arguably, the finest in France.
The main 2km long La Grande Conche has a special children's section with a variety of activities and a lifeguard in the summer.
North of the town is a series of sandy coves and further north still are unspoilt and wild stretches of beach.

And more....
A host of other leisure activities are available within the local area from jet skiing and quad biking to mini-golf and go-karting.
The local villages and towns also host a variety of family-friendly festivals, fetes and fireworks displays throughout the summer.
