Les Caves Carignan is one of six wonderful family friendly properties at Le Mas designed to give your children plenty of playmates, while you relax in the sunshine chatting to other parents, or enjoy a glass of the local wine in the shade of your terrace.
Les Caves Carignan is part of a terrace of five similar cottages that were once old stone wine caves, all of which face the swimming pool and enjoy a private covered terrace with BBQ and outdoor dining area, perfect for enjoying long lazy evenings in the balmy air.
The property has an abundance of things to do and places to explore, both on and off-site, including the chance to visit nearby Spain, the Pyrenees and gorgeous beaches.
We think this holiday will suit families with children of all ages – from babies to teens – as there really is something for everyone.

London Family, August 2018

Beautiful location and the playpark was wonderful for our little one.
The Oughton Family, August 2017
An amazing holiday, the perfect venue for a family with young children and brilliant hosts - Henri offering us freshly picked figs while we were enjoying our evening meal was just lovely. Could't recommend more highly, we will go again.
The Pendleton Family, August 2017
We have just returned from Les Caves - Carignan having had the most relaxing and calm holiday - even with a 5 year old and 19 months old! The property was lovely, had everything we needed and the shared pool, playground and playroom were amazing - we didn't need to bring any toys with us. The playroom was great for when it got too hot for the little ones to be outside. We are looking forward to returning!
The Pearmain Family, September 2015
Great accommodation with brilliant facilities for young children. Our host was incredibly helpful and friendly.
The Wright Family, July 2015
Standard of facilities for children surpassed expectations. It was truly excellent and have been raving about it since we got back, all of the property was superb!
The Grisby Family, August 2014
We all loved Les Caves and had a brilliant time. Thank you so much for a perfect holiday.
Family stayed 2014
Thank you for an amazing time at your beautiful home. We arrived home after a 14 hour drive, talking about the wonderful times we spent at Les Caves - the pool, the apricots and the nicest hosts. Thank you for all your kind hospitality and I'm certain we will return.
The Barber Family, June 2014
We would like to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Les Caves. We found it very peaceful and relaxing. The gite was spacious and well equipped for our needs. As a family we had a wonderful time together. Our grandson Lucas especially enjoyed the play barn. Thank you both for your attention to us during our stay and responding to our requests. We will have no hesitation in recommending Les Caves to friends and relatives and hopefully we will return in the future.

Located closest to the parking area, Les Caves Carignan makes a great cottage for two families holidaying together.
Walk through the large sliding doors from the terrace into the open plan lounge and dining room, furnished with two comfortable leather sofas and a solid oak dining table that can seat up to nine.
We know some parents value the chance of getting their kids off screens, which is why the property offers a TV (French satellite channels and CNN news) and DVD player with children's DVDs in the games room library.
There is a good size fully fitted kitchen with dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, washing machine, toaster, electric hob and oven – everything you’d need to try your hand at making some of the local cuisine.
Head up to the first floor (all stairs are gated top and bottom for safety) where you’ll find a double bedroom with fitted wardrobes, and a private terrace with table and chairs which you can relax in while admiring the lovely views of the Pyrenees. It also gives you somewhere to hang any wet swimming costumes so they are out of sight when sitting out downstairs. The terrace can also be reached from the landing. Making up the rest of the first floor is a shower room with WC and a second bedroom which is ideal for children with twin beds.
The second floor brings you to a double bedroom with extra single bed with a bathroom / shower and WC. There is also a second private terrace with recliners for looking out at the Les Alberes Mountains. This is ideal as a slightly separate living area for granny and granddad or perhaps a couple with a younger child.
The holiday cluster Le Mas is situated on a very quiet country road. There are only a couple of properties further along the way, ensuring it is safe, peaceful and quiet – no traffic noise!
Running in front of the row of properties is a large sunny terrace, with a low wall and steps leading up to a grassed area, which in turn leads to the wonderful enclosed, heated swimming pool. There are plenty of sun loungers to laze on dotted around the wide terrace surrounding the pool and if you want to escape the sun, a pretty pergola gives plenty of shade to chill out in.
The expansive, park-like gardens are another wow feature of this property. Kids can spend hours playing hide and seek, football, boules, leapfrog or anything else that will tire them out! And if that wasn’t enough, one of the barns has been converted into a brilliant indoor soft play area and games room. Just outside, younger guests can clamber all over the adventure playground with safe, soft matting underneath, while older kids can have a competitive game of ping pong.
A gate closes off the terrace from the parking area ensuring children stay away from any cars. There is one other separate holiday property on site set back from the five cuves, as well as a discretely placed owner’s residence.
Where to start? This beautiful region of France gets on average over 300 days of sunshine a year, which means you can enjoy plenty of outdoor activities for far longer than more northerly parts of the country. Your challenge will be trying to limit what you do!
If you fancy a stroll, walk to the local farmer to purchase some fresh farm produce or just nip to the next door neighbour who has honey and new laid eggs for sale.
Get in the car and just a few minutes away you’ll find the town of Thuir for a taste of rural French life without being inundated with tourists. The town has a selection of boulangeries, delicatessens, boutiques and cafes. If you don’t fancy cooking up some of the local produce available from the Saturday market, you can try some of the family-friendly and gourmet restaurants in the town. While you’re in Thuir, have a sample of Pernod while taking a look to the largest oak vat in the world which you can see at Les Caves Byrrh.
For another quaint town nearby, try the fortified village of Castelnou that hides a maze of cobbled streets, artisan workshops and restaurants behind its stone ramparts.
History buffs, if you’re intrigued by the myths surrounding the Holy Grail, this region of France is jam-packed with historic castles, ruins and sites linked to the crusades and the Cathars. Try the mountain top fortress of Peyrepertuse, the largest of the ‘Five Castles of Carcassonne’, for a flavour of medieval history.
If you prefer beaches to history, a forty minute drive, passing through the beautiful cathedral town of Elne, will bring you to miles and miles of the white sand beaches of Cote Vermeille. The kids will love Aqualand waterpark at Saint-Cyprien while the whole family will enjoy the resort of Canet Plage with its expansive beach, watersports marina and Canet en Roussillon Nature Reserve waiting to be explored.Alternatively, seek out the quiet coves and beautiful fishing towns of Collioure, Port Vendres and Banyuls closer to the Spanish border.
Just sixteen minutes from Canet Plage and twenty minutes from your holiday home at Le Mas, is the pretty town of Perpignan, with two rivers flowing through it. A good place for a stroll or take the kids bowling or the cinema should it be a rare rainy day. For more high-octane action for older kids, try to the Go Karting track at Rivesaltes, the biggest in Europe.
If mountains are more your thing, the Pyrenees are just a short drive away. Meander through beautiful mountain towns with spectacular views, stopping off at Ceret, famous for its cherry orchards and eclectic Saturday morning market, or continue on to the beautiful spa town of Amelie Les Bains at an altitude of 230metres.
In winter, you can try the ski resorts of Font Romeu or Pyranees 2000, or in the warmer months, older kids and teens will love to give white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking and mountaineering a go. For a more gentle adventure, try catching the famous ‘Yellow Train’ from the fortified town of Villefranche-de-Conflent for spectacular mountain views or visit the largest grotto in Europe - Les Grandes Canalettes – with incredible stalagmites, earning it the name of ‘the underground Versailles of the Pyranees’.
One thing you’ll notice as you travel around the region is the mix of Spanish and French culture that is peculiar to this formerly Spanish area, known as Catalan country. But if you would like to really contrast the two countries, why not cross the border into Spain, just twenty minutes from Thuir. Head straight for the sights of Barcelona (two hours drive) or try the home of Salvidor Dali – Figueres (fifty minutes) – or the sandy beaches of Roses (just over an hour). In fact, if you fly into Girona you can see some of Spain as you make your way to France....and you’ll probably get cheaper car hire too.
