The Airey Family, June 2017
We had a fabulous two week holiday at Mas San Julian. Henri and Rosa were excellent hosts. The accommodation was very spacious, the pool was lovely and we really appreciated all of the extra touches - inflatables in the pool, ride on tractors, apricots in abundance! Our little boy still raves about the play barn. Thank you for an easy holiday :)
The Oughton Family, August 2017
An amazing holiday, the perfect venue for a family with young children and brilliant hosts - Henri offering us freshly picked figs while we were enjoying our evening meal was just lovely. Couldn't recommend more highly, we will go again.
The Pearmain Family, 2015
Great accommodation with brilliant facilities for young children. Our host was incredibly helpful and friendly.
The Barber Family, June 2014
We would like to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Les Caves. We found it very peaceful and relaxing. The gite was spacious and well equipped for our needs. As a family we had a wonderful time together. Our grandson Lucas especially enjoyed the play barn.

The six properties found at Le Mas are approached via a quiet country road, with just one or two other properties in the vicinity, making it a peaceful, quiet and safe location.
Les Caves Macabeau is situated in the middle of a row of five stone cottages, directly opposite the swimming pool – perfect if you enjoy being at the centre of everything. It has a private covered terrace complete with BBQ and dining area for al fresco meals in the warm air.
Running the full length of the five properties is a sunny terrace, which leads up to a grassy area via a few steps set into a low wall. The huge heated swimming pool is enclosed just off this grassed area, with its own broad sun terrace festooned with sun loungers and shaded pergola area.
Children can safely play in the extensive, park-like grounds once they’ve had enough splashing in the pool. There is more than enough room for a game of football or a spot of hide ‘n seek, and plenty of company to play with! Younger guests will also love the indoor playbarn with soft play area, toddler gym equipment, books and toys, as well as the outdoor adventure playground and sandpit. Older kids will enjoy the games room and ping pong.
Children are kept safely away from any cars thanks to a gate to the parking area. There is one other separate holiday property on site set back from the five cuves, as well as a discretely placed owner’s residence.
This sunny region of France, very close to the Spanish border, boasts on average over 300 sunny days a year making it easy to take advantage of the wealth of activities and sites nearby.
Le Mas is set in a quiet rural enclave with just the neighbouring farmers to walk to who will happily sell you some fresh produce, honey or new-laid eggs. A short drive away you’ll reach Thuir, a market town offering insight into French rural life without any of the usual tourist trappings. A lovely selection of shops, delis and cafes plus a good Saturday market make it easy to buy local produce for those lazy lunches on your terrace. While in town take a look at the world’s largest oak vat in the world at Les Caves Byrrh and have a sample of the local pernod.
Also nearby is the beautiful fortified village of Castelnou. Like something out of a fairytale with its stone ramparts, you’ll discover a maze of cobbled streets, artisan workshop and eateries behind the walls.
If you can tear yourself away from this slow, relaxing way of life there is plenty to explore slightly further afield. For a complete contrast in culture, why not cross the border and head to Spain for a day trip? You’ll find Barcelona two hours away, the home of Salvidor Dali at Figueres (fifty minutes away), or the sandy beaches of Roses (just over an hour) with the Spanish border just twenty minutes from Thuir.
Alternatively, spend a day in the mountains. The Pyrenees has a wealth of exhilarating activities – skiing in winter, white water rafting, kayaking and mountaineering in warmer months. Or simply take in the incredible mountain views on the ‘Yellow Train’ which makes its way from the fortified town of Villefranche-de-Conflent. You could also visit the largest grotto in Europe – Les Grandes Canalettes – with incredible stalagmites that have resulted in it being called the ‘underground Versailles of the Pyrenees.’ You could also visit Ceret, famous for its cherry orchards or the beautiful spa town of Amelie Les Bains situated at 230meters.
Beach lovers have their pick of quiet coves and sleepy fishing villages of Collioure, Port Vendres and Banyuls, or long sweeping swathes of white sand beaches of Cote Vermeille, just forty minutes from the property. Saint-Cyprien’s Aqualand makes a fun day out for the whole family, as does a visit to Canet Plage resort with its watersports and nature reserve. Don’t forget to stop in at the beautiful cathedral of Elne on your way to the coast.
For traditional family activities, try bowling or the cinema in Perpignan, just twenty minutes away. Go Karting at Rivesaltes, Europe’s largest track, will get the adrenalin pumping, while a leisurely drive round Sigean Safari Park will keep the kids entertained. Further afield in Toulouse (two hours away) is Space City for a great space-themed park with imax, planetarium, stellarium and much more.
Any history buffs or kids doing school projects on the crusades, the Holy Grail or medieval times will find a wealth of history nearby including the mountain top fortress of Peyrepertuse, the largest of the ‘Five Castles of Carcassonne’, as well as plenty of other castles, ruins and sites linked to the Cathars.
Before booking, please read our Terms and Conditions.
The maximum occupancy is 6, plus an infant in a 1 cot in 3 bedrooms.
