Les Caves Grenache nestles alongside five other gites in a terrace at Le Mas, a family-friendly cluster that will delight children of all ages thanks to the extensive grounds, heated pool, playbarn and adventure playground.
Parents will be able to unwind on their private terrace, taking in the beautiful mountain views and peaceful rural location, or be sociable with the other mums and dads on site over a glass of the excellent regional wines.
There is also a plethora of things to see and do in the local area, from exploring the Pyrenees and white sandy beaches, to visiting nearby Spain for a cultural contrast. And with an average of over 300 days of sunshine a year, Les Caves Grenaches offers a family holiday retreat outside of the busy summer months.
Chandrashekar Family, August 2018
Fantastic property, the owner is friendly. There’s a lot of space of kids to cycle around, we had brought our bikes with us. The playroom is well stocked and wonderful for kids. As the property is part of a cluster, our daughter made friends with the kids living in the other properties too and had a lovely time. Location is perfect for exploring Pyrenees, we visited Perpignan, Eus, Molitg, Mosset, Le Gorges de Fou, Carcassonne etc. In hindsight we should have stayed an additional week!
Train Family, June 2018
We had a wonderful holiday here. Our 18 month old loved the play barn and pool, and we were able to relax and explore the local towns. Henri, our host, was very friendly and welcoming. We will return!
The Oughton Family, August 2017
An amazing holiday, the perfect venue for a family with young children and brilliant hosts - Henri offering us freshly picked figs while we were enjoying our evening meal was just lovely. Couldn't recommend more highly, we will go again.
The Pearmain Family, September 2015
Great accommodation with brilliant facilities for young children. Our host was incredibly helpful and friendly.
The Barber Family, June 2014
We would like to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Les Caves. We found it very peaceful and relaxing. The gite was spacious and well equipped for our needs. As a family we had a wonderful time together. Our grandson Lucas especially enjoyed the play barn.

Thank you for an amazing time at your beautiful home. We arrived home after a 14 hour drive, talking about the wonderful times we spent at Les Caves - the pool, the apricots and the nicest hosts. Thank you for all your kind hospitality and I'm certain we will return.

Grenache is one of five family holiday properties converted from a terrace of old stone wine caves. Sleeping up to seven (plus infants in cots) in three bedrooms, it’s suitable for two families or a family and grandparents to share.
Entering the property from a shaded terrace, you’ll find an open plan sitting room and dining room. This bright, cheerful room has leather sofas, oak tables and colour-coordinated accessories. A TV (French TV channels and CNN news) and DVD player and DVDs can be borrowed from the library in the games room.
From the dining area, you reach a good size fully fitted kitchen with everything you’d need to make life easy including hob, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer and washing machine.
Upstairs are two bedrooms – a double with fitted wardrobes and private terrace with table and chairs – a second bedroom with two single beds (perfect for kids), and a shower room with WC.
Up on the second floor is another double bedroom with an optional extra single bed, perhaps suitable for a family with just one younger child or grandparents. This level also has a bath/shower room with WC and another terrace, this one with views to Les Alberes Mountains and recliners to relax on. All the stairs are gated top and bottom ensuring little ones are kept safe.
Road noise won’t disturb you at this tranquil holiday cluster, which is located on a very quiet country road with just one of two other properties in the vicinity.
Les Caves Grenache is the second along a row of five similar stone cottages, all of which face the swimming pool. It has a private covered terrace complete with BBQ and dining area for al fresco meals in the warm air.
Step off your private patio onto a large sunny terrace which runs the length of all the properties. A low wall with two steps separates it from a grassy area, which in turn leads to the stunning enclosed, heated swimming pool. With a wide sun terrace surrounding the pool and plenty of sun loungers to laze on, you’ll never feel crowded. Simply relax in the sun while the kids splash in the water. If you get too hot, escape to the pretty pergola for some shade.
When the kids’ fingers and toes are too wrinkly to stay in the pool any longer, they’ll enjoy the massive, park-like gardens that are a definite wow factor of this property. There is plenty of room to kick footballs, play a competitive game of boules or perhaps a spot of hide ‘n seek. Younger children will love the adventure playground with sandpit and brilliant indoor playbarn complete with soft play area, toddler gym equipment, toys, books and board games. A games room plus ping pong table will keep older children happily entertained.
A gate closes off the terrace from the parking area ensuring children stay away from any cars. There is one other separate holiday property on site set back from the five cuves, as well as a discretely placed owner’s residence.
This sunny region of France, very close to the Spanish border, boasts over 300 sunny days a year making it easy to take advantage of the wealth of activities and sites nearby.
Set in a quiet, rural location, you could take a walk to the neighbouring farms to buy some fresh local produce like eggs and honey. Alternatively, hop in your car and just a short drive away you’ll find the town of Thuir. Here you’ll get a genuine taste of French rural life with none of the tourist trappings found elsewhere in the south of France. There are plenty of shops, delis and cafes to browse as well a selection of restaurants, both family friendly and gourmet. Enjoy the sights of the Saturday market or visit the largest oak vat in the world at Les Caves Byrrh.
Alternatively, try nearby Castelnou, a quaint fortified village hiding behind stone walls, with a maze of cobbled streets and eateries to explore.
Beach lovers, you are spoilt for choice. If you like long, sweeping beaches of white sand, the beaches of Cote Vermeille are just forty minutes drive away. Make a day of it at Saint-Cyprien’s Aqualand waterpark or head further along the coast to Canet Plage with its expansive beach, watersports marina and nature reserve. If you prefer quiet coves instead, head along the coast towards Spain and visit the lovely fishing towns of Collioure, Port Vendres and Banyuls.
With the Pyrenees on your doorstep, you can go skiing in winter at Font Romeu or Pyrenees 2000, or white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking or mountaineering in warmer months. Away from the mountains but just as exhilarating is Europe’s largest Go Karting track at Rivesaltes. For excitement with younger kids, try the famous ‘Yellow Train’ that runs from the fortified town of Villefranche-de-Conflent and get spectacular mountain views or visit the largest grotto in Europe - Les Grandes Canalettes – with incredible stalagmites, earning it the name of ‘the underground Versailles of the Pyrenees’.
If breathing in lungfuls of fresh mountain air is your idea of bliss, head towards the Pyrenees close to the Spanish border. Explore beautiful mountain towns with breathtaking views, stopping off in Ceret, famous for its cherry orchards and eclectic Saturday morning market, or visit the beautiful spa town of Amelie Les Bains at an altitude of 230metres.
If you’ve always wondered what happened to the Holy Grail or are fascinated by medieval history, you can’t go wrong in this part of France which is jam-packed with historic castles, ruins and sites linked to the crusades and the Cathars. Try the mountain top fortress of Peyrepertuse, the largest of the ‘Five Castles of Carcassonne’, for a flavour of medieval history.
Rainy day fun
It doesn’t often rain in this part of France, but if it does, you can keep the kids entertained at the cinema or bowling alley in Perpignan, just twenty minutes away. If the rain eases off, it’s also a pretty town to have a stroll through. Also nearby Perpignan is Sigean Safari Park, for a self-drive look at a range of exotic animals. Further afield in Toulouse (two hours away) is Space City for, a great space-themed park with imax, planetarium, stellarium and much more.
This region of France, previously part of Spain, has a unique culture. But if you fancy getting a real taste of two countries in one holiday, why not head across the Spanish border, just tweny minutes from Thuir. Head straight for the sights of Barcelona (two hours drive) or try the home of Salvidor Dali – Figueres (fifty minutes) – or the sandy beaches of Roses (just over an hour). In fact, if you fly into Girona you can see some of Spain as you make your way to France....and you’ll probably get cheaper car hire too.
