This lovely family-friendly cottage sleeps up to six (plus infants in cots).
From the outdoor heat, step into a calm, cool oasis through large glass doors to an open plan living and dining room, decorated with luxurious cream leather sofas, glass tables and wrought iron cushioned chairs. A TV (with French and CNN news channels) and DVD player with DVDs to borrow from the library in the games room.
This leads to a good size kitchen fully kitted out with everything you need to whip up a family feast or just those little extras that make life on holiday easier like hob, oven, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine.
Moving upstairs, you’ll find two bedrooms and a shower room with WC. The first bedroom is a double with fitted wardrobes and an outside terrace with table and chairs, where you can look out over the gardens. The second can be furnished as either a double or twin room as required.
Another level up will bring you to a third double bedroom with yet another outside terrace, this one complete with recliners from which you can enjoy the view of Les Alberes Mountains. There is also a bath/shower room with WC.
Note that the stairs to all levels are gated top and bottom for the safety of little ones.
You won’t be disturbed by traffic noise at this tranquil location. The six properties found at Le Mas are approached via a quiet country road, with just one or two other properties in the vicinity, making it peaceful, quiet and safe.
Les Caves Syrah is at the end of a terrace of converted stone wine caves, furthest from the parking area. It enjoys its own private covered terrace with BBQ and dining facilities for wonderful al fresco meals at any time of day.
Step off your private terrace onto a broad, sunny area that runs the length of the five cottages. This is separated from a grassy area with a low wall and two steps. From the raised grass area, you can access the stunning enclosed swimming pool, which is heated from Easter to October. There are plenty of sun loungers to laze on around the pool including a shaded pergola to escape the midday sun.
You will have a hard time getting your children out of the pool, but there is plenty to keep them entertained out of the water. Expansive gardens dotted with palm trees provide plenty of room for football or games. In a separate building you will find a fabulous playbarn complete with soft play area, toddler gym equipment, toys, books, tables and chairs for creative activities, board games and ping pong table. Outside this there is an adventure playground.
Children are kept safely away from any cars thanks to a gate to the parking area. There is one other separate holiday property on site set back from the five caves, as well as a discretely placed owner’s residence.
You won’t be short of sunshine or things to do in this unusual region of France that is very close to the Spanish border.
From your holiday cottage, head out on foot to the nearby farmer who will sell you fresh produce, eggs and honey. Or hop in your car to Thuir, just minutes away. This quintessential rural town has escaped tourism giving you the chance to experience French life as the French do. Nose around the local shops, brasseries, cafes and delis, or stock up on local fare at the Saturday market. There are plenty of family-friendly and gourmet restaurants to try out too. While in town, take a look at the world’s largest oak vat in the world at Les Caves Byrrh and sample some of the local pernod.
Also nearby is the beautiful fortified village of Castelnou. Like something out of a bygone era with its stone ramparts, you’ll discover a maze of cobbled streets, artisan workshops and eateries behind the walls.
If you can tear yourself away from this slow, relaxing way of life there is plenty to explore slightly further afield. Fancy swapping coq au vin for paella? Head over the Spanish border just twenty minutes away. You could head to Barcelona (two hours away), the home of Salvidor Dali at Figueres (fifty minutes away), or the sandy beaches of Roses (just over an hour).
Alternatively, spend a day in the mountains either getting active or just admiring the stunning scenery. The Pyrenees has a wealth of outdoor activities – skiing in winter, white water rafting, kayaking and mountaineering in warmer months. Take in the incredible mountain views on the ‘Yellow Train’ which makes its way from the fortified town of Villefranche-de-Conflent. Don’t miss the largest grotto in Europe – Les Grandes Canalettes – with incredible stalagmites that have resulted in it being called the ‘underground Versailles of the Pyrenees.’ You could also visit Ceret, famous for its cherry orchards or the beautiful spa town of Amelie Les Bains situated at 230meters.
If beaches are more your thing, you have a selection just forty minutes away. Choose between quiet coves and sleepy fishing villages of Collioure, Port Vendres and Banyuls, or long sweeping swathes of white sand beaches of Cote Vermeille. Saint-Cyprien’s Aqualand makes a fun day out for the whole family, as does a visit to Canet Plage resort with its watersports and nature reserve. Don’t forget to stop in at the beautiful cathedral of Elne on your way to the coast.
Perpignan is just twenty minutes away – choose this for a browse around this pretty town or keep the kids happy with a trip to the cinema or bowling alley. Go Karting at Rivesaltes, Europe’s largest track, will get the adrenalin pumping, while a leisurely drive round Sigean Safari Park will keep the kids entertained. Further afield in Toulouse (two hours away) is Space City for a great space-themed park with imax, planetarium, stellarium and much more.
History buffs will delight in this region of France, with a glut of castles, ruins and archeological sites relating to the crusades, Cathars and the Holy Grail. Try the mountain top fortress of Peyrepertuse, the largest of the ‘Five Castles of Carcassonne’ for a taste of medieval French history.
