Indoors & Outdoors

Indoors

Chez Jean's living, dining and kitchen areas are in a family-friendly open plan layout, but each space is defined by partial walls.

Spacious and tastefully decorated and furnished throughout in muted, contemporary colours, they feature traditional whitewashed wooden ceiling beams.

The sitting area is perfect for taking a break from the French sunshine, with plenty of comfy seating and, although no television freeview is available, there is a DVD player, screen and a selection of DVDs available on request from your hosts at time of booking.  Don't forget to pack your family's favourite DVDs too.

A large wooden table, with room for eight to eat in comfort, can be found in the dining area.  Of course the fabulous French sunshine may tempt you outdoors to eat on the large terrace.

Preparing and cooking meals in the modern fully-fitted kitchen will be a pleasure and it comes equipped with a super-sized cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine.

The first of four bedrooms is also on the ground floor.  This large double room, with space for a cot, benefits from a modern en suite shower room.

The wooden staircase, with child gates at the top and bottom, leads to a landing with a sofa, three bedrooms and a family bathroom.

The spacious master bedroom has a double bed and room for a cot.  The luxury en suite bathroom boasts a free-standing slipper bath and a large separate shower cubicle.

Both of the two twin bedrooms are cool and inviting.

The modern family bathroom features a bath with shower over.

Parent Point:

  • Owing to the age of the gîte, the stair and landing balustrades are marginally wider than current safety standards.  Please ensure children are supervised when going up and down the stairs and use the safety gates to prevent unsupervised access to the landing.

Outdoors

Chez Jean has a lovely private and fully-enclosed rear garden, mostly laid to lawn with mature trees.

There's a large terrace, furnished with an outdoor dining table and chairs, a barbecue for rustling up al fresco snacks and meals and sun loungers for relaxing.

At the front there is another little garden area, providing the perfect spot to bask in the evening sunshine.

The resort's extensive family-friendly facilities are all within a few minutes' walk of the gîte.

Parent Point:

  • A considerable distance - on the other side of the golf course - from Chez Jean there are two open lakes which, because of their size, can not be fenced for safety

What's Around?

Longeveau is located on the Charente/Dordogne border with a host of family-friendly attractions and picturesque and historical villages and towns all within easy reach.  The nearest fabulous sandy beaches are a two hour drive away.

Saint-Séverin

There are a number of pretty villages within easy reach of Longeveau, with the nearest being Saint-Séverin just 5km away.

The village is home to several small shops, including a bakery, butcher, chemist and supermarket, and local services.

There is also a popular small market every Thursday morning.

Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne

Travel about the same distance in the opposite direction and you'll discover Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne, officially one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Built on a hillside above the river Dronne, the village features narrow streets, shady squares to stop and watch the world go by and interesting architecture.

Children and grown-ups alike will enjoy the puppet theatre in the central square, showing classic tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Ali Baba.  The shows are extremely popular and booking is essential to guarantee a seat.

The village is famous for its Underground Church of St Jean, or monolithic church, carved out of the rock. It's size is impressive and, at 20m at its highest point, the tallest in the world.  A stone staircase leads up to the first floor where there is a spectacular view of the interior.

Another church worth visiting is the Romanesque St Jacques, boasting a beautiful 12th century facade with finely carved arches.

The river beach - with fresh sand shipped in at the start of every summer - is perfect for picnics and paddling and is sure to prove popular with the whole family.  There's also a children's playground, canoeing, kayaking and fishing - plus a great cafe.

Bonnes

Bonnes is another pretty village in a lovely location on the Dronne river and less than half an hour from Longeveau.

Here you'll find a pony club for children of all ages and abilities and a wonderful 11km countryside walk, Circuit de Bonnes.

A festival is held in August when the grand finale is a spectacular fireworks display.

Riberac

An attractive, but relatively quiet town, Riberac is at its best on a Friday morning when it stages a market, reputedly one of the biggest and best in the Dordogne.

Just 16km from Longeveau, there are also lots of local shops, including wine caves, a couple of big supermarkets and plenty of child-friendly restaurants.

Free music evenings are held in the town square on Tuesday nights in July and August.

La Jemaye

This little hamlet is well-known for its large lake with beaches, a play area and family-friendly eateries and is an easy half-an-hour's drive from Chez Jean.

There are also woodland walks and a hide to watch the birds on the lake.

During July and August there are sporting and activities and events, including water skiing and cycling.

Angoulème

The capital of Charente, the ramparted city of Angoulème is home to stunning architecture, traditional markets and beautiful gardens.

A 45-minute drive from Longeveau, the city centre has a myriad of shops from familiar high street names to traditional French boutiques.

Take time out to visit one of the many pavement cafes or dine in a choice of family-friendly restaurants.

The city is the world capital for Bande Dessinée - comic strip - and many of the buildings are decorated in this style.  There's also a fascinating museum dedicated to the art.

In Angoulème's mountain shopping zone you'll find more active fun for youngsters at Kizou Adventures -  an indoor playground with all the usual ball pools, ropes and soft play, for little ones aged from six months to 10 years.

And just outside the city is the fabulous Plan d'Eau water lake with several beaches - perfect for a bit of bucket and spade fun - and a wide range of water sports.

Cognac

Cognac, about an hour away from Longeveau, is famous for the grape-based spirit made in the town for more than 300 years.

Stroll through its narrow streets with a mix of fabulous medieval timber framed houses and grander mansions.

By the river you'll discover the ancient warehouses that still store barrels of cognac and are blackened by the alcohol evaporating.

A cruise on a replica gabarre, the traditional flat-bottomed oak boat that once transported cognac, salt and other produce, is a great way to see the town from the river and takes about two hours.

Signposted walking routes lead visitors through different parts of the town - either to explore the era of the salt trade and brandy industry or the urban growth that took place in the 19th century thanks to economic development.

Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular tourist attractions is a tour of one - or more - of the many big name cognac producers to find out about the drink's history, how it is made and sample a tasting.

Why not combine a trip to Cognac with a fun-packed visit to nearby Les Antilles de Jonzac indoor water park?

One of the largest in Europe this attraction will appeal to youngsters and adults alike.

For the little ones the centrepiece is a main lagoon with beaches, palm trees, a tropical glasshouse, slides and water toboggan ride.

For more serious swimmers there's a 25m sports pool and games and events are organised for children and teenagers.

For the grown-ups the fitness and health centre includes Turkish and Roman baths, a sauna, jacuzzis and a solarium - and, if you're feeling energetic, there's a fully-equipped fitness area.

If you get peckish the water park has a choice of eating options.

Saint-Emilion

Keeping with the theme of alcohol, a little further afield Saint-Emilion is one of the four Bordeaux wine regions and produces some of the finest wine in the world.

The village, about an hour-and-a-quarter from Chez Jean, is surrounded by vineyards and chateaux and there are lots of opportunities to sample and buy.

Even without wine, Saint-Emilion would deserve a visit - with pretty winding streets, pavement cafes, restaurants, local shops, and historical buildings and monuments.

The Romanesque church features a beautiful 14th century cloister and if you climb the bell tower you'll be rewarded with magnificent views over the town and surrounding vineyards.

There's also a great view from the top of the Chateau du Roy 13th century donjon in the centre of town - after you've negotiated the 118 steps.

A labyrinth of passages and rooms run deep under the village and there are guided tours taking in the catacombs and the impressive buried monolithic church, the biggest in Europe.

There's also an underground pottery museum with exhibits from the Roman period to modern day.

Beaches

Great beaches can be found about a two hour's drive from Longeveau - and two of the best seaside resorts are Arcachon and Royan.

Arcachon is busy year round and hugely popular with French families.  And it's easy to see why.  Superb sandy beaches, a picturesque sea-front promenade, plenty of shops, bars and eateries - topped off by the town's signature architecture showcased in the magnificent villas featuring stained glass, ornate balconies and intricate brickwork.

The resort is also home to the fun-packed Aqualand water park with rides and slides for all ages.  The attraction is open from June to September.

Royan's beaches are, arguably, the finest in France.

The main 2km long La Grande Conche has a special children's section with a variety of activities and a lifeguard in the summer.

North of the town is a series of sandy coves and further north still are unspoilt and wild stretches of beach.

And more....

A host of other leisure activities are available within the local area from jet skiing and quad biking to mini-golf and go-karting.

The local villages and towns also host a variety of family-friendly festivals, fetes and fireworks displays throughout the summer.
