Indoors & Outdoors

Indoors

Step inside Le Four à Pain and you are immediately struck by the building's history...exposed stone walls, tiled floors and original ceiling beams which are particularly striking upstairs.

Despite the building's age and former use, this lovingly-renovated gite has a welcoming and relaxing feel.

The living accommodation is open plan, comprising a comfortable sitting area, dining space and kitchen.

An eye-catching feature of the sitting area is the original bread ovens and there is lots of comfy seating.  Although no television freeview reception is available, there is a DVD player, screen and a selection of DVDs available on request from your hosts at time of booking.  Don't forget to pack your family's favourite DVDs.

A glazed door from this area leads to the garden, which is shared with two neighbouring holiday gîtes but still affords a considerable amount of privacy thanks to a high hedge running along much of its length.

A large wooden dining table provides room for the whole family to eat in comfort.  However, the French sunshine is likely to tempt you to enjoy meals al fresco so the outdoor dining table and chairs and barbecue will probably prove very useful.

The simple, but well-equipped kitchen provides all the holiday essentials including and oven/hob, fridge/freezer and microwave.  A washing machine and tumble dryer can be found in the laundry room just a short walk from Le Four au Pain next to the crèche.

As an alternative to cooking, the resort restaurant and bar offer meals for all the family and even a take-away service if you want to dine in the comfort of the gîte.

Up the open tread staircase, with child safety gates at the top and bottom, are three bedrooms and a shower room.

The master bedroom has the low door height - under 5ft - and is split level.

There's also a twin bedroom, with space for a cot, and a very small child's bedroom but there is room (just) for a full-size single bed.

The modern shower room, in common with all our holiday cottages, villas and apartments, comes with a baby bath for the tiny tots.

Parent Points:

  • The age of this property means the entrance door, a number of beams and some upstairs doorways are very low so please take care not to bump your head.
  • Although the stairs are gated at the top and bottom they are open tread so children will need to be supervised.
  • There is a step down through the low doorway to the master double bedroom and a step up to a raised area within this room.

Outdoors

The large sunny garden, with several mature trees, is shared with two neighbouring gîtes and fully-enclosed.

A high dividing hedge running the length of much of the garden provides a considerable amount of privacy.

There's a super furnished outdoor dining area, a built-in barbecue and sun loungers for relaxing.

The garden backs onto the resort's main swimming pools - in fact there's a secure gate providing access to this area in the wall of the next door garden area.

Being so close means the baby monitor - one of the items supplied in our Tots Essential Kit Guarantee - is within range of the swimming pool.  So, if you want, you could take a peaceful dip while your little one is having an afternoon nap.  Of course, the proximity also means the sound of families having fun at the pool can be heard in the gîte and garden.

All the other family-friendly resort facilities are a few short steps from the gîte.

Parent Points:

  • Although the shared garden is fully-enclosed the gite's lawned area is not. High hedges provide boundaries and privacy between neighbours.
  • There are two steps up to garden from the door in the sitting area
  • A considerable distance - on the other side of the golf course - from Le Four à Pain are two open lakes which, because of their size, can not be fenced for safety

Swimming pool

There is a large heated swimming pool shared with the resort, which is accessed via a double locked security gate, and surrounded by sun loungers for you to stretch out on and enjoy the sunshine.  There is also a smaller heated children's pool which has a secure gate where little ones will have lots of fun.

Club des Enfants

The Club des Enfants is open May to September (subject to demand), and other periods on request.  It is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9.30 am until 12.30pm, at an additional cost.  Babysitting is available to book through the childcare team.

It is open to children from birth to six years old and features a soft play area with age-appropriate toys and activities set up for each session.

There is a small kitchen, where baby food and bottles are prepared, and an enclosed garden with play equipment and a sandpit.

Play areas and sports barn

There is an enclosed outdoor play area where little ones can play on the swings, slide and climbing frame, as well as a play area that adjoins to the bar.

The sports barn can be set up as a compact tennis court, or a basketball court with lowered hoops for little ones.  It also hosts football and rounders games.

Clubhouse bar

The bar is a chill out zone, with comfy sofas, relaxing dining, board games, a pool table and television with UK satellite channels.  There is regular evening entertainment in July and August, including live music, wine tasting and quiz nights.

You can enjoy a drink in the bar while the children play in the attached play area, or order drinks to enjoy at Chez Barta or to take to the pool.  There's a great selection of bar snacks and, for the children, a healthy and simple picnic-style munch box is available, plus, of course, ice cream.

Each morning you can come and pick up fresh bread, croissants and breakfast pastries which can be collected from the bar.   Free Wi-Fi is available and an iPad is provided for guests.

Restaurant

The traditional-style restaurant is a fabulous family-friendly eatery with a picture-perfect outdoor terrace.  The restaurant is not open every day and due to seasonal demands opening hours and menus may vary; this includes the take- away service if you prefer to dine in your holiday home (pre booking may be required).

Hipp Organic baby food is available, there are half-size adult meals for older children, and meals can be blended for the in-betweeners to an age-appropriate consistency.

Tennis

There are three all-weather tennis courts at Longeveau, two of which are floodlit.  Equipment hire is available here.

There are regular social events and tournaments if you would like to participate.

Golf

Longeveau's nine-hole, par 64, golf course features plenty of bunkers and other obstacles to challenge golfers of all ages and abilities.  A multi-national club runs throughout the year and guests are welcome at many of the regular tournaments and social events.

Daily and weekly rates are available, with 10% discounted fees for guests, with equipment hire and tuition offered.

And that’s not all…

There's a weekly barbecue night where children can serve their own drinks at the children's 'bar', delve into the fancy dress box or challenge the grown-ups to a game of 'tennis football'.

In July and August Longeveau also holds a weekly outdoor cinema event featuring classic family films.

Once per week there is a visiting pizza van providing pre-ordered pizzas.  There is also a grocery van that comes every Friday evening selling supplies.

You can see there is a lot for you to enjoy with the family at Longeveau village…

What's Around?

Longeveau is located on the Charente/Dordogne border with a host of family-friendly attractions and picturesque and historical villages and towns all within easy reach.  The nearest fabulous sandy beaches are a two hour drive away.

Saint-Séverin

There are a number of pretty villages within easy reach of Longeveau, with the nearest being Saint-Séverin just 5km away.

The village is home to several small shops, including a bakery, butcher, chemist and supermarket, and local services.

There is also a popular small market every Thursday morning.

Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne

Travel about the same distance in the opposite direction and you'll discover Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne, officially one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Built on a hillside above the river Dronne, the village features narrow streets, shady squares to stop and watch the world go by and interesting architecture.

Children and grown-ups alike will enjoy the puppet theatre in the central square, showing classic tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Ali Baba.  The shows are extremely popular and booking is essential to guarantee a seat.

The village is famous for its Underground Church of St Jean, or monolithic church, carved out of the rock. It's size is impressive and, at 20m at its highest point, the tallest in the world.  A stone staircase leads up to the first floor where there is a spectacular view of the interior.

Another church worth visiting is the Romanesque St Jacques, boasting a beautiful 12th century facade with finely carved arches.

The river beach - with fresh sand shipped in at the start of every summer - is perfect for picnics and paddling and is sure to prove popular with the whole family.  There's also a children's playground, canoeing, kayaking and fishing - plus a great cafe.

Bonnes

Bonnes is another pretty village in a lovely location on the Dronne river and less than half an hour from Longeveau.

Here you'll find a pony club for children of all ages and abilities and a wonderful 11km countryside walk, Circuit de Bonnes.

A festival is held in August when the grand finale is a spectacular fireworks display.

Riberac

An attractive, but relatively quiet town, Riberac is at its best on a Friday morning when it stages a market, reputedly one of the biggest and best in the Dordogne.

Just 16km from Longeveau, there are also lots of local shops, including wine caves, a couple of big supermarkets and plenty of child-friendly restaurants.

Free music evenings are held in the town square on Tuesday nights in July and August.

La Jemaye

This little hamlet is well-known for its large lake with beaches, a play area and family-friendly eateries and is an easy half-an-hour's drive from Chez Jean.

There are also woodland walks and a hide to watch the birds on the lake.

During July and August there are sporting and activities and events, including water skiing and cycling.

Angoulème

The capital of Charente, the ramparted city of Angoulème is home to stunning architecture, traditional markets and beautiful gardens.

A 45-minute drive from Longeveau, the city centre has a myriad of shops from familiar high street names to traditional French boutiques.

Take time out to visit one of the many pavement cafes or dine in a choice of family-friendly restaurants.

The city is the world capital for Bande Dessinée - comic strip - and many of the buildings are decorated in this style.  There's also a fascinating museum dedicated to the art.

In Angoulème's mountain shopping zone you'll find more active fun for youngsters at Kizou Adventures -  an indoor playground with all the usual ball pools, ropes and soft play, for little ones aged from six months to 10 years.

And just outside the city is the fabulous Plan d'Eau water lake with several beaches - perfect for a bit of bucket and spade fun - and a wide range of water sports.

Cognac

Cognac, about an hour away from Longeveau, is famous for the grape-based spirit made in the town for more than 300 years.

Stroll through its narrow streets with a mix of fabulous medieval timber framed houses and grander mansions.

By the river you'll discover the ancient warehouses that still store barrels of cognac and are blackened by the alcohol evaporating.

A cruise on a replica gabarre, the traditional flat-bottomed oak boat that once transported cognac, salt and other produce, is a great way to see the town from the river and takes about two hours.

Signposted walking routes lead visitors through different parts of the town - either to explore the era of the salt trade and brandy industry or the urban growth that took place in the 19th century thanks to economic development.

Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular tourist attractions is a tour of one - or more - of the many big name cognac producers to find out about the drink's history, how it is made and sample a tasting.

Why not combine a trip to Cognac with a fun-packed visit to nearby Les Antilles de Jonzac indoor water park?

One of the largest in Europe this attraction will appeal to youngsters and adults alike.

For the little ones the centrepiece is a main lagoon with beaches, palm trees, a tropical glasshouse, slides and water toboggan ride.

For more serious swimmers there's a 25m sports pool and games and events are organised for children and teenagers.

For the grown-ups the fitness and health centre includes Turkish and Roman baths, a sauna, jacuzzis and a solarium - and, if you're feeling energetic, there's a fully-equipped fitness area.

A beauty area offers a variety of treatments and spa treatment services.

If you get peckish the water park has a choice of eating options.

Saint-Emilion

Keeping with the theme of alcohol, a little further afield Saint-Emilion is one of the four Bordeaux wine regions and produces some of the finest wine in the world.

The village, about an hour-and-a-quarter from Chez Jean, is surrounded by vineyards and chateaux and there are lots of opportunities to sample and buy.

Even without wine, Saint-Emilion would deserve a visit - with pretty winding streets, pavement cafes, restaurants, local shops, and historical buildings and monuments.

The Romanesque church features a beautiful 14th century cloister and if you climb the bell tower you'll be rewarded with magnificent views over the town and surrounding vineyards.

There's also a great view from the top of the Chateau du Roy 13th century donjon in the centre of town - after you've negotiated the 118 steps.

A labyrinth of passages and rooms run deep under the village and there are guided tours taking in the catacombs and the impressive buried monolithic church, the biggest in Europe.

There's also an underground pottery museum with exhibits from the Roman period to modern day.

Beaches

Great beaches can be found about a two hour's drive from Longeveau - and two of the best seaside resorts are Arcachon and Royan.

Arcachon is busy year round and hugely popular with French families.  And it's easy to see why.  Superb sandy beaches, a picturesque sea-front promenade, plenty of shops, bars and eateries - topped off by the town's signature architecture showcased in the magnificent villas featuring stained glass, ornate balconies and intricate brickwork.

The resort is also home to the fun-packed Aqualand water park with rides and slides for all ages.  The attraction is open from June to September.

Royan's beaches are, arguably, the finest in France.

The main 2km long La Grande Conche has a special children's section with a variety of activities and a lifeguard in the summer.

North of the town is a series of sandy coves and further north still are unspoilt and wild stretches of beach.

And more....

A host of other leisure activities are available within the local area from jet skiing and quad biking to mini-golf and go-karting.

The local villages and towns also host a variety of family-friendly festivals, fetes and fireworks displays throughout the summer.
