Indoors & Outdoors

Indoors

La Grangette's single storey design with no steps or stairs is ideal for families with babies and toddlers and offers lots of space to relax inside and outdoors.

The gîte is bright and cool - with tiled floors throughout - and decorated and furnished in a contemporary style.
The combined living room, dining area and kitchen is a great space for the whole family to enjoy.

The sitting area has a comfy sofa and chairs and features a double height ceiling with attractive original oak beams.  For your entertainment a television, DVD player, freeview box, and a selection of DVDs are available on request from your hosts at time of booking.  Don't forget to bring along your family's favourite DVDs too.

A dining table provides ample space for the family to eat together, although there is also the opportunity to enjoy al fresco meals in the charming courtyard garden.

The fully-fitted kitchen comes with all mod cons including an oven/hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine.

The large master bedroom, with double bed offers plenty of space to relax and drift off to sleep and benefits from a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite wet room with shower.
A twin bedroom, with lovely views over the courtyard garden and open countryside beyond, is also spacious with an en-suite bathroom with a bath and separate shower.

Outdoors

At the front of the gîte is a large sunny courtyard garden - very private, peaceful and fully-enclosed.

There is furnished outside dining area and a large barbecue for enjoying meals al fresco.

Sun loungers ensure you can make the most of the long summer days although there is also a spacious covered area, perfect to provide respite from the sunshine.

La Grangette also has it's own covered parking space with direct access to the courtyard garden.

The garden is very near to an inviting heated swimming pool, shared with four other properties in L'Hammeau.

Fully-enclosed by a wall and fence, with a secure gate, the heated pool has a shallow section for toddlers and babies. There are also sunny and covered areas to relax on the many loungers.

Just a short walk away are the resort's wide range of other family-friendly facilities.

Parent Point:

  • On the other side of the golf course, which is a considerable distance from the main Longeveau village, are two open lakes which, because of their size, cannot be fenced for safety

What's Around?

It could prove tricky to prise the family away from the resort's fantastic facilities, but step beyond Longeveau and you'll discover a host of family-friendly attractions, fabulous beaches and picture-perfect villages.

Saint-Séverin

The nearest village to Longeveau, just 5km away, is Saint-Séverin.

There are several small shops, including a bakery, butcher, chemist and supermarket, and local services.

A popular small market is staged every Thursday morning.

Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne

For a wider range of shops, services, eateries and attractions, travel about the same distance in the opposite direction to Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne

Built on a hillside above the river Dronne, the village is officially one of the most beautiful in France and features narrow streets, shady squares to stop and watch the world go by and interesting architecture.

Children and grown-ups alike will enjoy the puppet theatre in the central square, showing classic tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Ali Baba. The shows are extremely popular and booking is essential to guarantee a seat.

The village's Underground Church of St Jean, or monolithic church, carved out of the rock should be on your must-see list. It's size is impressive and, at 20m at its highest point, the tallest in the world.

A stone staircase leads up to the first floor where there is a breathtaking panoramic view of the interior.

For picnics and paddling, head to the river beach - fresh sand is shipped in at the start of every summer.

There's plenty to keep everyone entertained with a children's playground, canoeing, kayaking and fishing - plus a great cafe.

Bonnes

Bonnes is another pretty village in a lovely location on the Dronne river and less than half an hour from Longeveau.

Here you'll find a pony club for children of all ages and abilities and a wonderful 11km countryside walk, Circuit de Bonnes.

A festival is held in August when the grand finale is a spectacular fireworks display.

Riberac

Riberac is an attractive, but relatively quiet town, apart from a Friday morning when it hosts a market famed for being one of the biggest and best in the Dordogne.

Just 16km from Longeveau, there are also lots of local shops, including wine caves, a couple of big supermarkets and plenty of child-friendly restaurants.

Free music evenings are held in the town square on Tuesday nights in July and August.

La Jemaye

In the summer months you could easily while away a full day at this little hamlet's large lake with beaches, a play area and family-friendly eateries.

An easy half-an-hour's drive from La Grangette, there are also shaded woodland walks and a hide to watch the birds on the lake.

During July and August there are lots of sporting activities and events, including water skiing and cycling.

Angoulème

The capital of Charente, the ramparted city of Angoulème is the perfect combination of family attractions, stunning architecture, traditional markets and beautiful gardens.

A 45-minute drive from Longeveau, the city centre has a myriad of shops from familiar highstreet names to traditional French boutiques.

There are plenty of pavement cafes and a wide choice of family-friendly restaurants.

The city is the world capital for Bande Dessinée - comic strip - and many of the buildings are decorated in this distinctive style. There's also a fascinating museum dedicated to the art.

In Angoulème's mountain shopping zone Kizou Adventures is a haven of indoor fun with ball pools, ropes and soft play, for little ones aged from six months to 10 years.

And just outside the city is the fabulous Plan d'Eau water lake with several beaches - don't forget your bucket and spade - and a wide range of water sports for the more energetic.

Cognac

Cognac-lovers won't want to miss a visit to the town of the same name where the grape-based spirit has been made for more than 300 years.

Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular tourist attractions is a tour of one - or more - of the many big name cognac producers to find out about the drink's history, how it is made and taste the finished product.

About an hour's drive from La Grangette, enjoy a stroll through the town's narrow streets and admire the mix of medieval timber framed houses and grander mansions.

Signposted walking routes lead visitors through different parts of the town - either to explore the era of the salt trade and brandy industry or the urban growth that took place in the 19th century.

By the river you'll discover the ancient warehouses that still store barrels of cognac and are blackened by the alcohol evaporating.

A cruise on a replica gabarre, the traditional flat-bottomed oak boat that once transported cognac, salt and other produce, is a great way to see the town from the river and takes about two hours.

Nearby Les Antilles de Jonzac indoor water park is one of the largest in Europe and has lots to appeal to youngsters and adults alike.

The centrepiece is a main lagoon with beaches, palm trees, a tropical glasshouse, slides and water toboggan ride.

For more serious swimmers there's a 25m sports pool and games and events are organised for children and teenagers.

For the grown-ups the fitness and health centre includes Turkish and Roman baths, a sauna, jacuzzis and a solarium and fitness equipment.

A beauty area offers a variety of treatments and spa treatment services.

If you get peckish there is a choice of dining options.

Saint-Emilion

A little further afield Saint-Emilion is one of the four Bordeaux wine regions and produces some of the finest wine in the world.

The village, about an hour-and-a-quarter from La Grangette, is surrounded by vineyards and chateaux.

Even without wine, Saint-Emilion would deserve a visit - with pretty winding streets, pavement cafes, restaurants, local shops, and historical buildings and monuments.

The Romanesque church features a beautiful 14th century cloister and if you climb the bell tower you'll be rewarded with magnificent views over the town and surrounding vineyards.

Alternatively scale the 118 steps of the Chateau du Roy 13th century donjon, in the centre of town.

A labyrinth of passages and rooms run deep beneath the village and there are guided tours of the catacombs and impressive buried monolithic church, the biggest in Europe.

There's also an underground pottery museum with exhibits from the Roman period to modern day.

Beaches

No sunshine family holiday would be complete without a trip to the beach and several great ones can be found about a two hour's drive from Longeveau.

Two of the best are Arcachon and Royan.

Arcachon boasts superb sandy beaches, a picturesque sea-front promenade, plenty of shops, bars and eateries.

The resort is also home to the fun-packed Aqualand water park with rides and slides for all ages. The attraction is open from June to September.

Royan's beaches are, arguably, the finest in France and the main 2km long La GrandeConche has a special children's section with a variety of activities and a lifeguard in the summer.

North of the town is a series of sandy coves and further north still are unspoilt, wild stretches of beach.

And more....

A host of other leisure activities are available within the local area from jet skiing and quad biking to mini-golf and go-karting.

The local villages and towns also host a variety of family-friendly festivals, fetes and fireworks displays throughout the summer.
