Indoors & Outdoors

Indoors

The cool and contemporary open plan double-height living space of Le Porcherie has been renovated to retain much of its rustic charm and history.

The sitting area has plenty of relaxing and comfortable seating and for your entertainment a DVD player, screen and a selection of DVDs are available on request from your hosts at the time of booking. Remember to pack your family's favourite DVDs too.

French doors open on to a small private walled terrace and down some steps to a large lawned garden, shared with three neighbouring holiday gîtes.

The dining space has a large table to seat the whole family or, if you want to enjoy meals al fresco, there's also a table and chairs on the rear terrace.

The kitchen is small, but fully-equipped with everything needed for making holiday catering easy including an oven/hob, fridge/freezer and microwave. A washing machine and tumble dryer can be found in the laundry room just a short walk from the gîte next to the crèche.

There are two generously-sized and inviting bedrooms, a lovely master double and a pretty twin, both with feature exposed stone walls.

The separate, modern family shower room, like all our holiday cottages, villas and apartments, comes with a baby bath for the tiny tots.

Outdoors

La Porcherie features not one, but two, terraces for enjoying the French sunshine - a small sunken one at the front and a larger, raised one with a wall at the back.

Steps down from the rear terrace, furnished with an outdoor dining table and chairs, lead to a large lawned garden, shared with three neighbouring gîtes.

Here the children can run around and play while the grown-ups rustle up something delicious on La Porcherie's own barbecue or lounge on the sunbeds and enjoy the stunning views over the golf course and surrounding countryside.

The gîte is in a great spot close to both the tennis courts and resort bar, while Longeveau's other fantastic family-friendly facilities are a short stroll away.

Parent Points:

  • There are steps down to the private sunken terrace at the front of La Porcherie and a step up into the gîte
  • There is a flight of steps down to the shared garden from the raised rear terrace. Wobbly walkers will require supervision
  • A considerable distance - on the other side of the golf course - from the gîte are two open lakes which, because of their size, can not be fenced for safety

What's Around?

Head away from the rural tranquillity and fabulous facilities at Longeveau and you'll discover this beautiful region of France has lots to appeal to the whole family.

Saint-Séverin

Saint-Séverin, just 5km away, is the nearest of a number of pretty villages within easy reach of La Porcherie.

The village is home to several small shops, including a bakery, butcher, chemist and supermarket, as well as local services.

There is also a popular small market every Thursday morning.

Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne

In the opposite direction about the same distance from Longeveau is one of France's 'most beautiful villages' Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne.

Clinging to a hillside above the River Dronne, wander this lovely village's narrow streets, take time out in one of the pavement cafes or visit one of the many historical attractions.

The puppet theatre in the central square is popular with youngsters and adults alike, with classic tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Ali Baba. Be sure to book though, as the shows are popular.

The village is most well-known for its huge Underground Church of St Jean, or monolithic church, carved out of the rock. It is 20m at its highest point and the tallest of its kind in the world. For a spectacular view of the interior climb the stone staircase up to the first floor.

The river beach is great for all the family. Perfect for picnics and paddling, there's also a children's playground, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and a cafe.

Bonnes

If you have young equestrians in the family head for Bonnes, another pretty village less than half an hour from Longeveau, where there is a pony club for children of all ages and abilities.

For those who prefer getting around on two feet there is also a wonderful 11km countryside walk, Circuit de Bonnes.

The village holds a festival in August when the grand finale is a spectacular fireworks display.

Riberac

An attractive, but relatively quiet town, Riberac is buzzing on a Friday morning when it stages one of the biggest and best markets in the Dordogne.

Just 16km from Longeveau, there are also lots of local shops, including wine caves, a couple of big supermarkets and plenty of child-friendly restaurants.

Free music evenings are held in the town square on Tuesday nights in July and August.

La Jemaye

A large lake with beaches, a play area woodland walks and a hide to watch the birds on the lake can be found in this little hamlet - an easy half-an-hour's drive from La Porcherie.

And, if you get peckish there are several family-friendly eateries.

During July and August sporting activities and events are staged, including water skiing and cycling.

Angoulème

The ramparted city of Angoulème is the capital of Charente and home to stunning architecture, traditional markets and beautiful gardens.

A 45-minute drive from Longeveau, the city centre has a myriad of shops from familiar high street names to traditional French boutiques.

After indulging in some retail therapy, take time out to visit one of the many pavement cafes or dine in a choice of family-friendly restaurants.

The city is the world capital for Bande Dessinée - comic strip - and many of the buildings are decorated in this style and there's a museum dedicated to the art.

Kizou Adventures, in Angoulème's mountain shopping zone, is a great indoor playground with all the usual ball pools, ropes and soft play, for little ones aged from six months to 10 years.

And for more family fun, the fabulous Plan d'Eau water lake is just outside the city.

Here you'll find several super beaches and a wide range of water sports.

Cognac

Cognac, about an hour away from La Porcherie, is famous for the spirit made in the town for more than 300 years.

By the river you'll discover the ancient warehouses that still store barrels of cognac and are blackened by the alcohol evaporating.

A cruise on a replica gabarre, the traditional flat-bottomed oak boat that once transported cognac, salt and other produce, is a great way to see the town from the river and takes about two hours.

Signposted walking routes lead visitors through different parts of the town - and also by the river you'll see the ancient warehouses that still store barrels of cognac and are blackened by the alcohol evaporating.

Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular tourist attractions is a tour of one - or more - of the many cognac producers to discover the drink's history, how it is made and sample a tasting.

While in the area you could combine a trip to Cognac with a fun-packed visit to nearby Les Antilles de Jonzac indoor water park, one of the largest in Europe.

For the little ones there's a main lagoon with beaches, palm trees, a tropical glasshouse, slides and water toboggan ride.

More serious swimmers can take the plunge in the a 25m sports pool where games and events are organised for children and teenagers.

For the grown-ups there is a fitness and health centre with Turkish and Roman baths, a sauna, jacuzzis, a solarium, fitness equipment and a beauty area offering a variety of treatments and spa treatment services.

Saint-Emilion

A little further afield Saint-Emilion is one of the four Bordeaux wine regions and produces some of the finest wine in the world.

The village, about an hour-and-a-quarter from La Porcherie, is surrounded by vineyards and chateaux and there are lots of opportunities to sample and buy.

Even without wine, Saint-Emilion would deserve a visit - with pretty winding streets, pavement cafes, restaurants, local shops, and historical buildings and monuments.

The Romanesque church features a beautiful 14th century cloister and if you climb the bell tower you'll be rewarded with magnificent views over the town and surrounding vineyards.

There's also a great view from the top of the Chateau du Roy 13th century donjon in the centre of town - after you've negotiated the 118 steps.

A labyrinth of passages and rooms run deep under the village and there are guided tours taking in the catacombs and another impressive buried monolithic church, this time the biggest in Europe.

There's also an underground pottery museum with exhibits from the Roman period to modern day.

Beaches

A sunshine holiday wouldn't be complete without a day trip to the beach and there are several gorgeous ones about a two-hour drive from Longeveau.

Among them are Arcachon and Royan, both with great beaches, warm water and family-friendly facilities.

As well as several sandy beaches, Arcachon boasts a picturesque sea-front promenade, plenty of shops, bars and eateries.

The resort is also home to the fun-packed Aqualand water park with rides and slides for all ages which is open from June to September.

Royan's beaches are, arguably, the finest in France.

The main 2km long La Grande Conche has a special children's section with a variety of activities and a lifeguard in the summer.

North of the town is a series of sandy coves and unspoilt, wild stretches of beach.

And more....

A host of other leisure activities are available within the local area from jet skiing and quad biking to mini-golf and go-karting.

The local villages and towns also host a variety of family-friendly festivals, fetes and fireworks displays throughout the summer.
