Indoors

The interior of La Vieille Grange is simple, yet stylish...with lots of charming original features.

On the first floor, with spectacular views over beautiful open countryside, is the combined sitting area, dining space and kitchen.

Glazed double doors, which are in two parts to allow you to keep the bottom safely closed but open the top to allow cool air to circulate is you wish, open off this area onto a large, partially shaded, balcony. Furnished with a table and chairs, this provides a lovely alternative eating area.

The kitchen is small, but has everything needed to make holiday living easy including an oven/hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave. A washing machine is housed in the downstairs shower room.

Also on this level is the first of three bedrooms - all designed to ensure a good night's rest or relaxing afternoon siesta.

The very pretty and spacious twin room features original low beams and a modern en-suite shower room.

Down the wooden stairs, with child safety gates at the top and bottom, is the entrance hallway.  Off the hall are the two other generously-sized bedrooms - the master double bedroom, with an en suite bathroom with a bath and shower over, and a pretty twin bedroom.

All three bedrooms at La Vieille Grange have ample space for a cot.

Completing the ground floor accommodation is a separate shower room with washing machine.

Parent Points:

  • The original exposed beams in the first floor bedroom are low so please take care not to bump your head

Outdoors

La Vieille Grange's large balcony basks in the sunshine from morning through to evening and, consequently, is partly shaded.

Furnished with a dining and table and chairs it's the perfect spot for enjoying meals al fresco while taking in the glorious views over L'Hammeau heated swimming pool and the lush French countryside beyond.

There is also a sunny gravelled and grassy area in front of the gîte, with a shaded section thanks to the balcony above, a barbecue and loungers for relaxing with a book or simply sun bathing.

La Vieille Grange shares a heated swimming pool with four other properties in L'Hammeau and it's practically on the doorstep.

Fully-enclosed by a wall and fence, with a secure gate, the pool has a shallow section for toddlers and babies. There are also sunny and covered areas to relax on the many loungers.

Being so close to thegîte means the baby monitor - one of the items supplied in our Tots Essential Kit Guarantee - is within range of the swimming pool. So you could take a dip while your little one is having an afternoon nap or crashed out for the night. Of course, the close proximity also means the sound of families having fun at the pool can be heard in the gîte and on the terrace.

The rest of the resort's wide range of family-friendly facilities are all just a short stroll away.

Parent Points:

  • A flight of stone steps leads down to the garden and front door and wobbly walkers will need supervision
  • The garden is not enclosed
  • A considerable distance - on the other side of the golf course - are two open lakes which, because of their size, can not be fenced for safety

View Longeveau Resort

This region of France is the perfect family-friendly holiday destination and there's plenty to see and do within easy reach of Longeveau.

Saint-Séverin

There are a number of pretty villages within a short drive - or cycle - and the nearest is Saint-Séverin at just 5km away.

The village is home to several small shops, including a bakery, butcher, chemist and supermarket, and local services.

There is also a popular small market every Thursday morning.

Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne

Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne, officially one of the most beautiful villages in France, is about the same distance in the opposite direction.

This lovely village is built on a hillside narrow streets, shady squares and interesting architecture.

Children and grown-ups alike will enjoy the puppet theatre in the central square, showing classic tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Ali Baba. Extremely popular, booking is essential to guarantee a seat.

The village's famous Underground Church of St Jean, or monolithic church, is carved out of the rock and not to be missed. It's size is impressive and, at 20m at its highest point, the tallest in the world. Climb the stone staircase up to the first floor for a spectacular view of the interior.

Another church worth visiting is the Romanesque St Jacques, boasting a beautiful 12th century facade with finely carved arches.

The river beach is perfect for picnics and paddling and is sure to prove popular with the whole family. There's also a children's playground, canoeing, kayaking and fishing - plus a great cafe.

Bonnes

Yet another pretty village worth a visit is Bonnes, also on the Dronne river, and less than half an hour from Longeveau.

Here you'll find a pony club for children of all ages and abilities and a picturesque 11km countryside walk, Circuit de Bonnes.

A festival is held in August when the grand finale is a spectacular fireworks display.

Riberac

An attractive, but relatively quiet town, Riberac really comes to life on a Friday morning when it stages a market, reputedly one of the biggest and best in the Dordogne.

Just 16km from Longeveau, there are also lots of local shops, including wine caves, a couple of big supermarkets and plenty of child-friendly eateries.

Free music evenings are held in the town square on Tuesday nights in July and August.

La Jemaye

This little hamlet is well-known locally for its large lake with beaches, a play area and family-friendly places to eat and is an easy half-an-hour's drive from La Vieille Grange.

The children will also enjoy the woodland walks and hide to watch the birds on the lake.

During July and August there are lots of sporting activities and events, including water skiing and cycling.

Angoulème

The capital of Charente, the ramparted city of Angoulème is a feast for the senses with stunning architecture, traditional markets and beautiful gardens.

A 45-minute drive from Longeveau, the city centre is also perfect for a little retail therapy with its wide range of shops from familiar high street names to traditional French boutiques.

Take time out to visit one of the many pavement cafes or dine in a choice of family-friendly restaurants.

The city is the world capital for Bande Dessinée - comic strip - and many of the buildings are decorated in this unusual style. There's also a fascinating museum dedicated to the art.

In Angoulème's mountain shopping zone youngsters can play all day at Kizou Adventures - an indoor playground with all the usual ball pools, ropes and soft play, for little ones aged from six months to 10 years.

And just outside the city is the fabulous Plan d'Eau water lake with several beaches - perfect for a bit of bucket and spade fun - and a wide range of water sports.

Cognac

Cognac, about an hour away from Longeveau, is famous for the grape-based spirit made in the town for more than 300 years.

By the river you'll discover the ancient warehouses that still store barrels of cognac and are blackened by the alcohol evaporating.

Why not take a cruise on a replica gabarre, the traditional flat-bottomed oak boat that once transported cognac, salt and other produce? It's a great way to see the town and takes about two hours.

Back on dry land, signposted walking routes lead visitors through different parts of the town - either to explore the era of the salt trade and brandy industry or the urban growth that took place in the 19th century thanks to economic development.

One of the most popular tourist attractions is a tour of one - or more - of the many cognac producers to find out about the drink's history, how it is made and sample a tasting.

While in the area, you could visit the nearby Les Antilles de Jonzac indoor water park.

One of the largest in Europe this attraction will appeal to youngsters and adults alike.

The centrepiece is a main lagoon with beaches, palm trees, a tropical glasshouse, slides and water toboggan ride.

For more serious swimmers there's a 25m sports pool and games and events are organised for children and teenagers.

For the grown-ups the fitness and health centre includes Turkish and Roman baths, a sauna, jacuzzis and a solarium and fitness equipment.

A beauty area offers a variety of treatments and spa treatment services.

Saint-Emilion

Also on the theme of alcohol, a little further afield Saint-Emilion is one of the four Bordeaux wine regions and produces some of the finest wine in the world.

The village, about an hour-and-a-quarter from La Vieille Grange, is surrounded by vineyards and chateaux and there are lots of opportunities to sample and buy.

Even without wine, Saint-Emilion would deserve the drive - with pretty winding streets, pavement cafes, restaurants, local shops, and historical buildings and monuments.

The Romanesque church features a beautiful 14th century cloister and if you climb the bell tower you'll enjoy magnificent views over the town and surrounding vineyards.

There's also a great outlook from the top of the Chateau du Roy 13th century donjon in the centre of town - after you've negotiated the 118 steps.

A labyrinth of passages and rooms run deep under this fascinating village and guided tours take in the catacombs and impressive buried monolithic church, the biggest in Europe.

There's also an underground pottery museum with exhibits from the Roman period to modern day.

Beaches

Great beaches can be found about a two hour's drive from Longeveau - and two of the best are Arcachon and Royan.

Arcachon is busy year-round and popular with French families. And it's easy to see why. Superb sandy beaches, a picturesque sea-front promenade, plenty of shops, bars and eateries - topped off by the town's signature ornate architecture.

The resort is also home to Aqualand water park, packed with rides and slides for all ages and open from June to September.

The main 2km long La Grande Conche at Royan has a children's section with a variety of activities organised and a lifeguard in the summer.

Royan's beaches are, arguably, among the finest in France and north of the town is a series of sandy coves and unspoilt, wild stretches of beach.

And more....

There's no shortage of other leisure activities within the local area, from jet skiing and quad biking to mini-golf and go-karting.

The local villages and towns also host family-friendly festivals, fetes and fireworks displays throughout the summer.
