Indoors & Outdoors

Indoors

The interior of L'Ecurie is furnished and decorated in a simple, traditional French style.

On the galleried first floor, with spectacular views over beautiful open countryside, the resort's lakes and golf course, is the combined sitting area, dining space and kitchen.

This marvellous open plan area is double height and full of olde worlde charm.

The comfortable and spacious sitting area has plenty of plush sofas and chairs and, on top of an English freeview box, there is a DVD player, and screen. A selection of DVDs are available on request from your hosts at time of booking. Don't forget to pack your family's favourite DVDs too.

French doors open off this area onto a large covered balcony, furnished with a table and chairs.  This super space is perfect for dining, relaxing and taking in the magnificent views.

Several wooden steps lead up from the sitting area to the dining space, with a large wooden table seating up to eight people in comfort and perfect for all the family to come together at meal times.

Also on this level, and up a few more steps, is the first of four bedrooms - a generously-sized double bedroom with a modern en-suite shower room.  This bedroom is a considerable distance from those downstairs and, while it is not suitable for parents who need to be close to their children, it is perfect for a couple with a baby in a cot or grandparents.

On the other side of the 1st floor is the kitchen, fully-equipped with an oven/hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave.  There's also a separate larder cupboard and a washing machine. A further washing machine and tumble dryer can be found in the laundry room just a short walk from the gite next to the crèche.

Down the wooden stairs, with child safety gates at the top and bottom, off the entrance hallway is a super sized double bedroom with a walk in wardrobe, a door to the side terrace and en-suite shower room.

There is also a separate family-sized shower room which, like all our holiday cottages, villas and apartments, comes with a baby bath for the tiny tots.

A step up leads to a large, light, triple bedroom with a small double bed and a single.

Further along the corridor is a pretty, spacious twin bedroom with a door to the rear garden.

All bedrooms at L'Ecurie have ample space for a cot.

 Parent Points:

  • The quirky layout of this property means there are several steps between rooms on both levels
  • Owing to the age of the original building the balustrades on the landing to the kitchen do not meet current safety standards.  Please use the gate supplied to prevent unsupervised access

Outdoors

There is an excellent choice of outside spaces at L'Ecurie.

The large first floor balcony is fully covered to provide shade from the heat of the French sunshine and furnished with a dining table and chairs and relaxing sofas.

This is the perfect spot to take in the magnificent views over the resort's golf course, lakes and beautiful countryside - maybe with a glass of local Bordeaux wine or Cognac.

There is also side terrace great for dining al fresco - the gite has its own barbecue - and a fantastic lawned garden, shared with two other holiday homes, where the children can run around and grown-ups can relax on the sun loungers.

Longeveau's wide range of family-friendly facilities are all within a few minutes' walk of the gite.

Parent Point:

  • The garden is not fully-enclosed
  • A considerable distance - on the other side of the golf course - from L'Ecurie are two open lakes which, because of their size, can not be fenced for safety

L'Ecurie is set in a lovely location on the edge of Longeveau, yet within an easy short walk of all the resorts extensive family-friendly leisure facilities.

What's Around?

Longeveau is located on the Charente/Dordogne border with a wide choice of family-friendly attractions and picturesque villages and towns all within easy reach. The nearest sandy beaches are a two hour drive away.

Saint-Séverin

The nearest village to Longeveau is Saint-Séverin, just 5km away.

This pretty village is home to several small shops, including a bakery, butcher, chemist and supermarket, as well as local services.

There is also a popular small market every Thursday morning.

Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne

In the opposite direction, and about the same distance, is one of France's 'most beautiful villages' Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne.

The village clings to a hillside above the River Dronne and features narrow streets, shady squares with pavement cafes and lots of sites of historical interest.

The puppet theatre in the central square is popular with kids and adults alike, with classic tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Ali Baba. The shows are extremely popular and booking is essential.

The village is famous for its Underground Church of St Jean, or monolithic church, carved out of the rock. Its size is impressive and, at 20m at its highest point, the tallest in the world.

Make sure you climb the stone staircase up to the first floor for a spectacular view of the interior.

The river beach - with fresh sand shipped in at the start of every summer - is perfect for picnics and paddling and has something for the whole family with a children's playground, canoeing, kayaking and fishing - plus a great cafe.

Bonnes

If you have young equestrians in the family head for Bonnes, another pretty village less than half an hour from L'Ecurie, where there is a pony club for children of all ages and abilities.

For those who prefer getting around on two feet there is also a wonderful 11km countrysidewalk, Circuit de Bonnes.

The village holds a festival in August when the grand finale is a spectacular fireworks display.

Riberac

The attractive, but relatively quiet town, of Riberac is at its best on a Friday morning when it stages one of the biggest and best markets in the Dordogne.

Just 16km from Longeveau, there are also lots of local shops, including wine caves, a couple of big supermarkets and plenty of child-friendly restaurants.

Free music evenings are held in the town square on Tuesday nights in July and August.

La Jemaye

A large lake with beaches, a play area, woodland walks and a hide to watch the birds on the lake can be found in this little hamlet - an easy half-an-hour's drive from Longeveau.

And, if all the fun activities make you hungry there are also several family-friendly eateries.

During July and August sporting activities and events are staged, including water skiing and cycling.

Angoulème

The ramparted city of Angoulème is the capital of Charente and home to breathtaking architecture, traditional markets and beautiful gardens.

A 45-minute drive from Longeveau, the city centre has a myriad of shops from familiar high street names to traditional French boutiques.

After indulging in some retail therapy, take time out to visit one of the many pavement cafes or dine in a choice of family-friendly restaurants.

The city is the world capital for Bande Dessinée - comic strip - and many of the buildings are decorated in this style and there's a museum dedicated to the art.

Kizou Adventures, in Angoulème's mountain shopping zone, is a great indoor playground with ball pools, ropes and soft play, for little ones aged from six months to 10 years.

And for more family fun, the fabulous Plan d'Eau water lake is just outside the city. Here you'll find several super beaches and a wide range of water sports.

Cognac

Cognac, about an hour from Longeveau, is famous for the alcoholic drink made in the town for more than 300 years.

Signposted walking routes lead visitors through different parts of the town to explore the era of the salt trade and brandy industry or urban growth that took place in the 19th century.

Alternatively, simply stroll through the town's narrow streets to discover a fascinating mix of fabulous medieval timber framed houses and grander mansions.

For an different view, enjoy a two-hour cruise along the river on a replica gabarre, the traditional flat-bottomed oak boat that once transported cognac, salt and other produce.
Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular tourist attractions is a tour of one - or more - of the many big name cognac producers recounting the drink's history, how it is made and offering tastings.

Close to Cognac is the exciting Les Antilles de Jonzac indoor water park,
one of the largest in Europe.

Perfect for children and adults, there's a main lagoon with beaches, palm trees, a tropical glasshouse, slides and water toboggan ride and a 25m sports pool where games and events are organised for children and teenagers.

For the grown-ups the fitness and health centre includes Turkish and Roman baths, a sauna, jacuzzis and a solarium and, if you're feeling energetic, a fully-equipped fitness area.
The beauty area offers a variety of treatments and spa treatment services.

If you get peckish this popular water park has a choice of eating options.

Saint-Emilion

A little further afield, Saint-Emilion is one of the four Bordeaux wine regions and produces some of the finest wine in the world.

The village, about an hour-and-a-quarter from L'Ecurie, is surrounded by vineyards and chateaux and there are lots of opportunities to sample and buy.

Wander the pretty winding streets, take time out at one of the pavement cafes or restaurants, discover historical buildings and monuments, or indulge in some retail therapy.

The Romanesque church features a beautiful 14th century cloister and if you climb the bell tower you'll be rewarded with magnificent views over the town and surrounding vineyards.

There's also a great view from the top of the Chateau du Roy 13th century donjon in the centre of town - after you've negotiated the 118 steps.

A labyrinth of passages and rooms run deep under the village and there are guided tours taking in the catacombs and impressive buried monolithic church, the biggest in Europe.

There's also an underground pottery museum with exhibits from the Roman period to modern day.

Beaches

There are a number of lovely beaches about a two hours' drive from Longeveau - and two of the best are Arcachon and Royan.

Arcachon not only has superb sandy beaches, but also a picturesque sea-front promenade, plenty of shops, bars and eateries plus some beautiful architecture showcased in magnificent villas featuring stained glass, ornate balconies and intricate brickwork.

The resort is also home to the fun-packed Aqualand water park with rides and slides for all ages.

Royan's beaches are, arguably, the finest in France.

The main 2km long La Grande Conche has a special children's section with a variety of activities and a lifeguard in the summer.

North of the town is a series of sandy coves and unspoilt, wild stretches of beach.

And more....

A host of other leisure activities are available within the local area from jet skiing and quad biking to mini-golf and go-karting.

The local villages and towns also host a variety of family-friendly festivals, fetes and fireworks displays throughout the summer.
