Outdoors

The sun shines almost all year round in the Canary Islands and there’s plenty of outdoor space for everyone to enjoy.

A shady covered patio is the perfect spot to escape the heat of the day, with space for children to play out of the sun, as you curl up in the enticingly comfy rattan chairs set around a small table.

A lockable gate leads through to the main pool area, with a separate hot tub, outdoor shower, and sun loungers by the water’s edge.  The private heated pool is completely enclosed and large enough for a few lengths before breakfast as well as space for children to splash to their heart’s content.

Or barbecue some of the island’s wonderful fish and seafood in the large outdoor kitchen set to the side of the villa, with its own al fresco dining table and fridge – although a door leads back into the indoor kitchen if you need extra provisions.  A separate utility area, at the back of the rear garden with its black volcanic earth, houses a washing machine and drying racks.

For fabulous views, head up to the roof terrace where you can look out across the ocean to neighbouring island Fuerteventura or enjoy a drink under the stars.

Parent Points:

  • Access to the property from the road leads directly into the pool area, although this is completely enclosed when the gate is shut, you should be aware on arrival at the property that you enter directly into the pool area.
  • There is a gate to prevent access onto the roof terrace. Children should not be allowed onto the roof terrace unsupervised.

There’s plenty to entertain the family in the lively resort of Playa Blanca, where you can also book tours to some of the island’s main sites. But with quiet, easily navigable roads and some lovely spots away from Lanzarote’s main tourist attractions, it’s a great way to explore with small children.

Hit the beaches

The seafront and sheltered bay of Playa Flamingo is just over 2km from the villa.  With gentle waves and golden sand for sandcastles, you’ll find shops and cafes overlooking the beach too.  Wander the ‘Paseo Maritimo’, the promenade which stretches the length of Playa Blanca, and you’ll pass several other coves including a busier Blue Flag beach towards the town centre.

A 10 minute drive away are the dunes of Papagayo, voted the most beautiful beach in Spain.  The unspoiled rolling sands are best when travelling with older children, as there’s little shade and no facilities; but it’s a stunning seafront spot.

Get active

The island has a string of waterparks for water babies to enjoy, with one right on the villa’s doorstep. The Aqualava water park is just over 1km  away and aimed at younger children with gentler slides, a lazy river and a quieter atmosphere.

Or try a submarine safari in Puerto Calero, a half hour drive from Playa Blanca. Diving to around 25m, it’s suitable for kids over two; letting you see some of the island’s marine life without needing to dip a toe in the water.

Golf fans can improve their handicap in Puerto del Carmen, with 18 holes looking out onto the ocean in the shadow of the island’s volcanoes.

Shop the markets

Just beyond Playa Blanca itself lies Marina Rubicon; around 10 minutes’ drive from the villa. The chic modern marina is worth a visit on any day, with stylish waterfront restaurants, designer boutiques, and yachts bobbing on the water. But, on Wednesday and Saturday mornings there’s the added temptation of a craft market. Offering jewellery, bags, and clothes, as well as carvings and children’s toys. It’s a great spot to find souvenirs.

The attractive historic capital of Teguise, a half hour drive from Playa Blanca, has its own larger Sunday market; a great experience but do expect busy crowds.

Experience the volcano

You can’t escape the influence of Lanzarote’s volcanoes while you’re on the island. A devastating eruption in 1730 covered the land in ash and lava, creating the starkly beautiful black landscape you see today.

The best spot to discover more is Timanfaya National Park, used as the location for several science fiction films. Take a bus tour around the otherworldly scenery, as well as watching some crowd pleasing tricks – a bucket of water shooting out of the earth as steam, thanks to the heat of the magma below the surface... With the chance to have your lunch barbecued using volcanic heat, it’s a lot of fun for kids too. The bus is baby-friendly, although wriggly toddlers might get a little bored.

Discover Lanzarote’s wine

Another unexpected legacy of the island’s volcanic past is found in the string of vineyards in the valley of La Geria. With vines protected by horseshoe shaped stone shelters, it’s a unique sight as you drive along. But there’s also wine tasting and small museums in some of the wineries. Don’t miss trying the local malvasia, a favourite of Shakespeare.

Indulge in seafood

Tucked away on the island’s west coast, near Timanfaya’s volcanoes, the village of El Golfo is easily one of the most picturesque places to eat. A string of fish restaurants stretch along the coast, with turquoise sea and white spray breaking on the black rocks.

Take your pick and try the freshest seafood and fish platters as you watch the waves. Very child-friendly, it’s a great place to go for lunch, with a small playground nearby.

Discover Cesar Manrique

No one has had a greater influence on Lanzarote than artist and architect Cesar Manrique. It’s thanks to Manrique that the island has escaped much of the high-rise development of other Canary Islands, as well as encouraging the whites and blues of the houses.

You can still visit his house, plus various installations and attractions around the island. The Cactus Gardens and the underground cave lake of Jameos del Agua are both great family days out, or see some of his sculptures at the viewpoint he created in the north, Mirador del Rio, with fantastic views to the minor Canaries.

Ferry to Fuerteventura

Lanzarote’s quieter neighbour is easy to spot on the horizon from Playa Blanca and two companies run regular ferries across the water between the islands. The journey takes 20-25 minutes to Corralejo, with around a dozen trips per day.
